According to reports in Belgium this afternoon, Newcastle are ‘waiting in the wings’ over a deal to sign Club Brugge star ‘Wesley’ – despite claims that Cardiff have made the first move for the the striker.
It was reported a few months ago that club scouts had watched the 6ft 3′ striker during Brugge’s 1-1 draw with Monaco in the Champions League – something I can believe given the Belgian league is the sort of ‘value for money’ division Rafa may be forced to shop in this month.
Whilst 10 goals and 6 assists in 27 games is hardly prolific at a decent club in the Belgian league, Wesley is still just 22 – also having the sort of size and stature to suggest he could cut it physically in a lone striker role.
Just like Diagne – a striker scoring goals in the Turkish league who we were linked with just a few days ago – you’d think Wesley would be an affordable option, but whether he’s anywhere near good enough to fire us to safety is a completely separate matter.
Not only that, I’d seriously question whether we’d be willing to spend more than the likes of Cardiff – a side whose owner will probably show more ambition to secure safety than our very own Mike Ashley.
Here’s him in action:
