This comes from Chris Waugh’s latest in-depth piece on Rafa’s increasingly deflated mood, stating that the NUFC boss had several potential recruits lined up last month – yet he’s there’s been no activity from the club a week into the window.
Here’s a snippet from the Chronicle, revealing how Benitez has already been let down – despite him feeling that THREE signings are essential to keep us up this season:
It is understood that Benitez had potential recruits lined up by the beginning of December who he wanted through the door by, or even before, January 1.
The window is more than a week old, and Newcastle are still yet to deliver the wing-back, attacking-midfielder and striker the Spaniard believes are the minimum United need in order to survive.
This may be nothing more than a severe warning from Benitez to the board – just like his statement saying it would be a ‘miracle’ if we stay up – however this does suggest that Rafa really is seriously concerned about our survival hopes.
Last season we had a squad who were still living off that ‘newly promoted’ tag, with us keen to prove the doubters wrong on our return to the top flight, however it feels like the motivation has disappeared on all fronts this time.
With it hard to see where a much needed boost is going to come from as we head into the second half of this torrid season, a few new signings may be essential to keep us up this time around.
