Just a few months after sealing a surprise move to the United Arab Emirates, Yohan Cabaye is now available on a free – and several Newcastle fans are calling for us to snap him up on a short-term deal.
The former France international turns 33 today – so he’s no spring chicken – but his return could make so much sense given our worrying lack of midfield options.
I’d seriously question Ashley’s ability to sign a player of his age (especially when his wages wouldn’t be cheap), although a deal until the end of the season could make a lot of sense.
Ashley clearly has no interest in spending big, but Benitez clearly needs midfield reinforcements, so the signing of Cabaye on a free may just appeal to all parties here.
Here’s what Newcastle fans (and journalists) have been saying on social media after news that the former Palace midfielder had been released:
The last line of the above tweet probably explains why it won’t happen, however.
Even if it makes a lot of sense, I have no faith in Ashley sanctioning this sort of deal.
Did you watch him at Palace before he left….No thanks

What was wrong with him at Palace? Didn’t really put a foot wrong there and they were desperate to keep him. Palace have a history of ruining good players. He’s a cracking player and a huge upgrade on anything we’ve got. The problem is we aren’t ambitious enough to even make a move for him so it’s not happening.
Not sure who are fans are expecting us to bring in if Cabaye isn’t good enough. Maybe we can make a loan offer for Messi and Dybala and stick them on £40 per week
