According to the Shields Gazette’s Miles Starforth, Newcastle will not be pursuing a deal to bring Yohan Cabaye back to the club – despite the fact he’s now available on a free this month.
The former France international is now available on a free after leaving UAE side Al Nasr just six months after arriving over the summer, with several Newcastle fans urging the club to do a deal given our total lack of midfield options at present.
Despite the injury problems and absence of Ki for another few weeks, it seems we won’t make a move for Cabaye – despite us going into tonight’s FA Cup replay with just Hayden and Longstaff as our only fit central midfielders.
Here’s a snippet from the Shields Gazette’s latest piece, claiming the club will pursue deals for a no.10, a winger and a left-back – not Yohan Cabaye:
Yohan Cabaye is available on a free transfer – but he’s not a target for Newcastle United.
Benitez only has two fit central midfielders – Isaac Hayden and Sean Longstaff – for tonight’s FA Cup replay against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
However, United manager Benitez is focused on strengthening elsewhere, despite his shortage of midfielders.
Benitez wants to sign a No 10, a winger and a left-back in this month’s transfer window.
In our defence, he’s now 33 and his last move was anything but a success out in the United Arab Emirates, so I can see why he wouldn’t be considered by Ashley of all people.
He’s available on a free, but he’d come with big wages – and I’m not entirely sure what we’d then do with him once Shelvey, Diame and Ki were all available once again.
We’re not going to make many signings this month, so might it be for the best IF we do prioritise moves for some much needed quality in attack?
Helluva story there Olly.
We’re not going for a 33 year old free agent, that we never thought for a moment we’d be going for?
