According to Spanish outlet AS, Newcastle have launched a loan bid to sign Gelson Martins on loan from Atletico Madrid.
The report states that the loan bid is in the region of £3.5-£4m, claiming Newcastle are hoping to clinch the deal ahead of Monaco and Arsenal.
The Portuguese international joined the La Liga side from Sporting Lisbon, but has endured a difficult time since making the move to Spain – making just 8 appearances in the league all season.
It would be a signing out of the blue, but one that could give us the pace we’re sorely missing out wide – although I struggle to see Ashley stumping up such a loan fee for a player who’d only be able to play a handful of games between now and May.
The 23-year-old has made 21 appearances for the Portuguese national side and was one of the star players in Sporting Lisbon’s side last season, bagging an impressive 13 goals and 13 assists before sealing a move to Alteitco Madrid.
WTF – 4.5M for less than half a season !!! And you think Ashley would agree ??? You’re delusional.
And I would agree with Ashley on this one. I think even Rafa would agree.
This is one of those many Agent-driven, ‘Comments for Cash’ articles that are awash in the media now-a-days.
Pure Garbage. Olly, you should be ashamed. Reheating someone else’s tripe doesn’t make for cordon bleu journalism.

I should be ashamed? You do realise this blog is just NUFC fans sharing what’s being said in the media and having our say on it.
Nowhere did I say it was happening or that Ashley would pay it, so please don’t come shooting the messenger.
