According to Sky Italy reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, Newcastle are now showing interest in signing Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca.
The Italian has played 9 times for Monaco this season following a move from Torino last summer, bagging two assists in the process.
It’s been made clear that Benitez is looking for an attack minded left-back this month, so a move for the Italian U-21 international would make sense on that front.
His Monaco side have had a torrid season so far, with Thierry Henry’s men currently in the drop zone – meaning Barreca may be tempted to move on given the very real threat of relegation.
What is unclear is whether we’ll be pursuing a loan or permanent deal – however I’d expect it to be the former given the way we appear to be approaching transfers this month; especially when he cost Monaco £9m just a few months ago.
