According to reports, former NUFC flop Islam Slimani is now a January target for relegation rivals Southampton – despite his horrific spell with Fenerbahce so far this season.
As we all know, his six-month spell at St James’ Park was largely spent on the sidelines – either due to an injury he couldn’t shake off or suspension – and a year on it’s fair to say things have only got worse for the Algerian.
The 30-year-old was loaned out to Fenerbahce last summer, but a few months on and it’s reported that the Turkish giants are trying to terminate the deal – with him scoring just 4 times in 22 appearances, picking up as many red cards as he has league goals (1).
With that in mind, it’s hard to believe many clubs would be keen let alone a side fighting for their lives for Premier League survival, however it seems Southampton are showing interest.
If you’d told me that a relegation rival of ours could be signing Leicester’s £27m striker on loan this time last year I would’ve said it was a smart piece of business and deal we should’ve been looking at, but it seems Slimani really is risk that’s best to be avoided if his last 18 months are anything to go by.
