Sky Sports have named Papiss Cisse’s £9m move to Newcastle as one of THE best January signings – with his instant impact and mid-season boost in 2012 proving just why Mike Ashley must spend over the next week.
The Senegalese striker arrived from Bundesliga side Freiburg 7 years ago, with his stunning record of 13 goals in his first 12 games playing a huge part in our 5th place finish that season.
Here’s what Sky Sports had to say about Cisse:
‘Newcastle had to wait until Cisse finished Africa Cup of Nations duties with Senegal before seeing precisely what their money had bought them in January 2012, but the man from Freiburg proved worth the wait.
‘In an astonishing burst of scoring, Cisse scored 13 goals in his first 12 games for Newcastle to help provide added impetus to what was already an encouraging campaign.
‘Three consecutive doubles did much to see off West Brom, Liverpool and Swansea before Cisse topped all that with two stunning goals in a 2-0 win at Chelsea that all but sealed a fifth-place finish and European football at Newcastle once again.’
Cisse’s performance levels dropped, but his impact was absolutely instant – something Mike Ashley would do well to remind himself about.
Despite us sitting just two points above the drop zone, with Rafa working with a squad and fan base in desperate need of a boost, Ashley STILL appears reluctant to spend on anything other than a loan fee.
We’re not expecting a £30m striker to sign and deliver the sort of goal rush Papiss Cisse provided a few years ago, but it would be VERY interesting to see just how our fortunes could change if he sanctioned a club record deal for Rafa’s top target Miguel Almiron.
Sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate, Mike..
