Sky reporter claims NUFC are now in ‘advanced talks’ to sign left-back

According to Sky reporter Gianluca di Marzia, Newcastle are now in advanced talks to sign Monaco left-back Antonio Barreca – a deal that was lined up by the club before Jordan Lukaku’s proposed move was called off.

It seems Benitez has now went back in for the 23-year-old, with us reported to have made a loan bid for the Italian before a move for Jordan Lukaku emerged.

Here’s what Sky Italy reporter Gianluca di Marzia has had to say about Barreca – claiming he is a player we’ve been ‘eyeing for some time’:

“After the breakdown of negotiations with Lazio for Lukaku, the British team returns to work on Antonio Barreca, on which the English company had been eyeing for some time.

“It’s a negotiation that’s well advanced and interrupted only by the imminent arrival of Lukaku. Once again, Benitez’s team returned to the negotiations for the Monaco defender who, after just six months in France, could move into the Premier League. Contacts have been re-opened.”

Details of any potential deal are not made clear, but you would presume that it’s still a loan we are pursuing.

It was reported earlier in the week that Thierry Henry had sanction his potential move to St James’ Park, however many doubted whether he’d still be available given the ex-Arsenal striker was given the boot by Monaco just yesterday.

It’s not yet been confirmed, but this latest ‘update’ from the Sky journalist suggests Monaco may still be willing to do a deal – with the left-back having struggled to nail down a place in their side after making a move from Torino last summer.

  1. Far too little, far too late. The club is dead, dead, dead. Murdered by My Cashley. If you want something more entertaining, watch some paint slowly drying. Who in there right minds buys a season ticket for this awful dross? I’m off to support a club with ambition. Wolverhampton Wanderers. 😡
