It’s official! – NUFC announce Antonio Barreca signing – Watch first interview here

Newcastle United have announced the signing of Antonio Barreca, with the left-back arriving on loan with an option to buy from Monaco.

The 23-year-old is a former Italy U-21 international, having signed for Monaco last summer after an impressive spell with Serie A side Torino.

The club have confirmed that the loan deal includes an option to buy in the summer, with the future fee said to be £9m if he impresses between now and the end of the season.

Here’s what he’s had to say during his first interview with NUFC TV:

“I am very happy to be here. I have accepted this challenge with a great deal of enthusiasm and I can’t wait to start!

“I know that Newcastle is a big and historic club. I know that the people here really love football and that the fans are really behind the team.

“I think that the Premier League is the best league, so for me this is further motivation to do well.”

This means Rafa has finally landed himself a left-back, with an injured Paul Dummett being our only real option in that area before Barreca’s arrival.

One down, a few more to go you would think – with Almiron looking all set to be announced in the coming hours.
