Alan Shearer says this is the real reason NUFC signed Miguel Almiron – Could he be right?

Alan Shearer believes NUFC new boy Miguel Almiron will prove to be a ‘very good signing’ for the club – but believes Ashley only sanctioned the deal as he feared he would lose Rafa AND season ticket holders.

Big Al often plays devil’s advocate and I don’t blame him. After all, he has had first hand experience of Mike Ashley so has a decent idea of what Rafa has gone through.

Here’s what he had to say when asked about news of Almiron’s imminent club record arrival:

At last. The two reasons why something had to happen at Newcastle – they’ve got to keep Rafa and they had to show Rafa that they mean business.

“The other reason is it’s season ticket renewal time and there are thousands threatening not to renew their season tickets so they had to make a statement. Hopefully it’s the first of many.

“Almiron will be a club record and he’ll be a very good signing. He’s what Newcastle want – a number 10, skilful, left-footed, a bit of pace. He’ll be useful.”

He speaks positively of Almiron himself, however he remains doubtful when it comes to Ashley’s intentions – suggesting he’s only sanctioned the deal in panic after ‘thousands’ threatened to cancel their season tickets.

His comment about it ‘hopefully being the first of many’ is the key thing here for me. We don’t know exactly why Ashley gave this club record deal the green light – either way it’s positive for NUFC – however the big test will come in the summer.

Will he back Benitez again? Will he sanction several big money buys? Training ground improvements? Academy development?

We shall see, but for now at least Benitez will have a spring in his step, with Ashley FINALLY allowing him to sign one of his top targets for big money.

  1. TO LITTLE TO LATE FROM ASHLEY 2 PLAYERS IN 1 ON LONE.

NO WHERE NEAR GOOD ENOUGH THEY HAVE OR ARE COLLECTING £50 MILL +

IF I WERE RAFA I WOULD BE SAYING TO ASHLEY NOT GOOD ENOUGH AND WALK AWAY INTO A JOB WHERE I WAS APPRECIATED.

THE ONLY REASON ASHLEY SHELLED OUT WAS TO TRY TO GET RAFA TO SIGN ANOTHER CONTRACT AND PREVENT FANS FROM NOT RENEWING THEIR SEASON TICKETS THAT IS THE ONLY REASON, BUT NO WHERE NEAR GOOD ENOUGH.

  2. So after the window where does that leave us, hardly any change really, still going to be a struggle to stay clear of the relegation zone.

Will we succeed i hope so !!

  3. It has made no difference to my resolve, I cancelled two weeks ago and I’m still sticking by it. Their is no guarantee Rafa will extend anyway, like Al said it’s only because he’s bricking himself. I refuse to give that leach anymore of my hard earned cash. Oh and why the fook do we need a bank loan to by a (let’s not forget) average priced player (20m) is still nothing in today’s market. I do hope the kid has the skills his repretation suggests. Good look ‘Miggy’ HWTL

  4. Rafa is a good man manager. He’s done wonders with Diame (remember how bad he was at one point), he’s turned Hayden from a petulent want-away into a solid holding midfielder, he’s reigned in the worst of Shelvey’s misbehaviour, he’s developed Lascelles into a half-way decent captain and Perez into a somewhat usuful false-#10, and on and on. But he hasn’t really done too well with Ashley (or his go-betweens). He needs to admit he has failed with the management at NUFC.
With players who don’t work out, you can always churn them (and Rafa churns a lot) or sideline them (under 23s, loans away, etc) until their contracts run out (and he’s done that a lot over the last three years, as well). But you can’t do any of that with the management. His appeals to the fans, to the public in general, to anyone who’ll listen (he even has a politician pushing against Ashley) have all fallen on deaf ears. Ashley’s understanding of the game and club management hasn’t improved, his willingness to accommodate the interests of fans, players, or coach doesn’t exist (dismissed as an irrelevance). He buys up comments for cash from the major competition sponsors and old player/pundit hacks, he wheels and deals to influence the FA behind closed doors, he plays “club-for-sale” every transfer window for the distraction it provides, he milks the club of the TV money and cash generated from player sales, while he keeps his ‘loans’ unpaid and hanging over the clubs neck like the Sword of Damacles. Ashley is worse than Aarons, worse than Barton ever was, worse even than Ranger (well, perhaps, comparable to Ranger)
Rafa has no option. He has run his contract down, now he will have to churn himself, …or from his point of view, he will have to churn clubs and get himself one more fit-for-purpose.

  5. Ashley and Charnley again failed to get in the minimum Rafa asked for. 3 players minimum were needed with the whole of the transfer window to get them. Penny pinching, money grabbing parasites on the decaying body of our once great club. 😥
