Newcastle 0-1 Crystal Palace: Big chance missed as stupid mistake proves costly

A game between two sides looking for that one win to secure survival but one we threw away – with a late Palace winner punishing us in a match we controlled.

On another day we’d have won that one, with the big chances falling to us, but failure to kill this Palace side off always gave them that opportunity to hurt us on the counter attack and they did exactly that curtesy of some reckless defending.

Why DeAndre Yedlin dives in on Zaha is beyond me. We not only had men over on the cover, but it’s just suicidal to go jumping in on a player like him who doesn’t need a second invitation to go down in the box.

Not only is it a defeat in a game where a draw could’ve felt a little frustrating, it’s another week where we fail to move significantly clear of the relegation zone, with the injury to Lejeune looking like another bad one. Benitez has confirmed that he heard a ‘click’ in his left knee – he did his right cruciate knee ligament in last summer – so that could be a huge blow.

It’s easy to focus on Yedlin’s mistake and be downbeat in defeat, but I thought Hayden and Almiron were very good today. The former was strong and successful in the tackle, winning so many of his midfield battles, while Almiron was bright from start to finish, being direct and inventive on the ball and showing brilliant work ethic and movement off it. How the Chronicle’s Lee Ryder gave Almiron a 5 – the same mark he gave Yedlin in his player ratings piece – is beyond me.

Here’s how the bottom half of the table looks after today’s result

Elsewhere Burnley leapfrogged us with a huge 3-1 win at Bournemouth, while Huddersfield’s woes continued as Leicester – our next opponents – ran out 4-1 winners.

We’re now down to the final five games of the season, with a tough trip to Leicester next Friday being followed by two potentially vital games against Southampton and Brighton:

  • Leicester (A)
  • Southampton (H)
  • Brighton (A)
  • Liverpool (H)
  • Fulham (A)

A bitter blow today, losing a game we could’ve easily won and losing one of our top defenders in the process, but we move on.

  1. I know you say don’t focus on Yedlin diving in, but as it’s what lost us the game, it’s difficult not to really.

I think it just highlights how poor Yedlin is at defending. That’s 11 penalties Palace have been awarded and scored this season – and I reckon most will have been won by Zaha in the same way as today. They would have spoke about in the build up and said ‘don’t dive in’.

We were good enough for the win today, but should have at least walked away with a disappointing draw – so the defeat is so frustrating.

  2. We had 18 attempts to their 3 and they only had 1 on target – the penalty in the 81st min – so we were coping with them pretty comfortably.
Disappointing to have created so many chances and not scored ourselves as well though.

On a separate note – gutted for Lejeune. He’s been quality since he came back in, and such a good fit in that 3 CBs formation. I know we are well stocked with CBs, but I’m a big fan of his and I think that will be a lengthy absence for him again.

I’m not getting away from how poor Yedlin was for their goal, I’m saying I won’t let it take away from the fact Hayden and Almiron were very good today.

  4. Olly. We have to agree to disagree on Rondon today. It is your blog after all.

I will repeat, I thought he was Shola-esque.

The ball bounced off him but he was a handful. He made some bad decisions on the free kicks as they were at bad angles or too far out for him to go for goal. But then, just when you thought everything was lost you thought he might just win it. Like Shola against the Mackems.

That was my reading of it any way 🙂

  5. Almiron’s ability to run a defenses will help us in a lot of ways, especially his ability to win free kicks around the box. Maybe he can be our Zaha as long as Shelvey and Rondon don’t go for goal every time from far out and acute angles?

  6. My prediction at the start of the season was 16th. I wavered a bit and went 15th for a few minutes but I never thought we would be relegated. I still think we will be 15th or 16th.

  7. Didn’t deserve to lose today. Almiron best player on either side. Did Ryder really only give him 5.? What a plonker. I wonder how many goals Yedlin has cost us this season.? As we don’t score many goals I think he is not someone we can afford. Perhaps one of the poorest defenders we have had. Beginning to think I would prefer Manquillo. Never ever thought I would say that.

  8. Should have said Shelvey was very poor when he came on. With hindsight we were wrong to take off Ki.

  9. The vital game will probably not be for us but for the Red Bin-dippers. It will break their hearts if Rafa is the one to spoil their title challenge.

Omens, fatalism, Mystic Meg. It is setting up for all of this! 🙂

We are safe. We will pick up a win and draw from the rest of the games so even though it was disappointing today, I can live with it.

  10. AND… Ryder is an idiot.

When was the last time you read anything remotely interesting he had to say or when he had a “scoop”. He wrote that the Almiron deal was off 6 hours before it was completed FFS. And then the Chronic denied it in one of their latest excuse pieces that they feel they have to write now.

Just surprised that Wor Lee didn’t give Dubravka a 1 in his ratings for not saving the penalty.

I know mate, but it counts for nothing in defeat – and that defeat came about coz of Yedlin so it can’t not overshadow their performance.
It’s like scoring a wonder goal but loosing 2-1 ??‍♂️

  13. Bring back The Beatles accents to Scouserdom. No more of the back of the throat ready-to-spit Stevie G and Carra. We need to go back to the nasal John Lennon and Ringo Starr.

I don’t think it was an affected accent at all but the scouser accent of the Beatles was just so much easier to listen to than the nails-on-a-chalkboard high pitched mother-in-law tone of Carra.

My mother used to turn the Telly off whenever Alan Ball came on and that was 40 years ago.

She just couldn’t bare the high piched, scatchy voice he had. And that was without the scouse.

She turns Carra to mute as well 🙂

  16. So Rafa has said they have been talking about a new deal but at this time they are ‘not too close’.
I’m not sure why I’m surprised, because on every player transfer they have pi$$ about and tried to do things on the cheap ?.
But when you have a manager like Rafa who has more than proven himself, it should be a done deal – never mind not too close.

This will be down to the different clause Ashley will want in his contract, so he can’t walk away Scot free when Ashley starts breaking the false promises he made Rafa to get him to sign.

  19. I don’t see the point of shooting from direct free kicks unless you are Lionel Messi. Rondon scored a beauty for us but that is not what usually happens. How many have we seen Shelvey smash over the bar. What did Rondon do today? Unless it is 24 to 26 yards and located in line between the posts, I think we should devise another strategy.

I saw a stat that Ronaldo went like 60 direct free kicks without scoring. He broke it at the World Cup from about 25 yards.

There is an answer though. BE LIONEL MESSI. I think he has scored 5 direct free kicks in his last 5 games.

  22. Rondon has done well for us this season but I don’t see him as the man to build the team around going forward. I do find him slow which to some extent he covers with his body strength. We need someone who also has speed. Not easy to get with what we are willing to pay. Perhaps we should be looking for potential in the lower leagues either at home or abroad. I certainly go along with the current opinion that Almiron should be playing in the number 10 slot. Showed yesterday he has good vision and pick out a good pass.

  23. Mindless stupid tackle from Yedlin cost us the game. He must have been told a million times that Zaha will turn back into him. He does it all the time often replacing the ball with his foot. He’s actually winning all these penalties. Stupid boy!

At times I felt Rondon was taking far too long to get his feet right on chances. Somebody quick (like Muto?) would just belt the ball in. Pity.

      (Quote)

  24. Almiron, Ki and Lejeune (until injury ) all played well yesterday. I think we paid the price for lack of converting the shed load of chances we created . At 0.0 the longer the game went on the bigger the chance Zaha wins a pen to snatch a late winner, you could smell it coming, that’s how bu ll ***** that loss was.
Absolutely fuming with Yedlin, that lad has not got a defenders brain, he has pace that is all, his delivery isn’t all that either.
Zaha will tie you in knots in and around the box and Rafa should of done the same as Roy and kept Miggy further up the pitch whenever they had a corner so that Migs could get the speedy counter on.
When ever we got a corner , Zaha was away the other end taking two of our players to deal with him, he is a massive threat and Yedlin was always gonna come off worse in a 1 v1 situation.
Palace would be in serious, serious danger if not for the pens that lad has won, fair or foul .

Rondon was a menace to them all game, he may not of scored but like Miggy worked his bollocks off , at £16m he’s worth every penny but we still need a younger version who’s just as good. We also need a better RB . Perez needs to stay on his feet better, refs are not listening to his moans.

We are not safe by any stretch, Cardiff and Brighton have games in hand on us don’t forget.
I swear if Cardiff stay up at our expense then i’m done with it until that fat **** sells us.

  26. I think Rondon is as advertised. The West Brom fans said he works hard but is not clinical. Apparently he is a lovely bloke but he will only get you 9 or 10 goals. That’s not enough in our team where we have non-scoring midfielders and wingers. Hopefully, Almiron will score a few but we need another goal threat in the middle.

I’m 50/50 on keeping Rondon. I will repeat, we knew what we were getting as he had played 3 seasons at West Brom. My hope was that playing with theoretically better players at NUFC that Rondon would nab a few more. However, it seems that 9-10-11 goals is his ceiling. That’s probably enough to keep us up.

Get Zaha in and let Rondon take the penalties and then you will have a 16-17 goal striker on your hands. Milosojovic is Palace’s top scorer for the past 2 years.

Usually he says nothing on contract discussions, so for him to say they are ‘not too close’ with a very frustrated look on his face (though that may have been due to the defeat in fairness), makes me seriously doubt a compromise will be found.

If he goes I think players follow him out the door – we loose a good 4-5 first team players and end up with someone like Puel trying to rebuild a squad on peanuts again.

  29. I have no clue where we get a goal every other game type of striker. They are very hard to find. Look at Chelsea. They had Morata who cost them 60 million. Higuan who cost Juve 90 million Euros when he was transferred there. And Giroud who is keeping Lacazette out of the French team. None of them has pulled up any trees and they all are paid a lot more than Rondon which is something that Ashley takes into account.

I suppose Rondon is our level and we have to accept his shortcomings, otherwise we are stuck with the Spanish Donkey. Every cloud…

  30. Various media outlets have released figures showing payroll of PL teams after Spurs and Liverpool posted massive profits. The figure quoted for us last season was 47 million, which was 4th lowest. Rafa is not a stupid man and will be very aware of this. He will also know that we made approximately 170 million last year and had minimal net spend. He will know where the profit went – into the fat lad’s pocket. Given these numbers it must have been in excess of 50 million he paid himself back and probably closer to 70 million.

Our payroll is set up for The Championship. I doubt Rafa will settle for that for another 2 years so I agree with Sharpy that he is probably gone.

Our accounts were due March 31. Is it a coincidence that they have not been filed yet? Places like The Chronic are still quoting our payroll as 100 million from the manipulated last set of accounts so Ashley knows he can play these games and get away with it. I think the fine for late filing of accounts is like $1,500 so this is more PR than anything else as he doesn’t want to show his hand in terms of – profit that he has taken, payroll, and spending.

  31. I’d go after Tosun from Everton. I know his stats don’t look good for them, but I don’t think he fits their style.

Alternatively I’d spend what it would take to get Abraham, who Rafa wanted in the first place. I think he could be a 12-15 goals a season forward in the PL

I like Maupay at Brentford too, but he may be more a 10 goals a season forward with more assists.

  32. Ryder (I know, I know) is quoting Hayden as saying he still wants away. He is saying it is not fair on his daughter to make a 5 hour journey (I assume train). But where would you go Isaac that is that much closer? Brighton, Bournemouth and Watford are about the only teams I think would be interested and they are still a 3 hour drive away from South Wales which is where his girlfriend lives.

And those teams have been punching above their weight. I reckon Brighton will be relegated next year and the others will not be far off. Be careful what you wish for.

      (Quote)

  33. Re-read Ryder’s article and Hayden is saying he still wants away in yesterday’s programme. Strange thing for the Editors to put in there but anyway… lends more weight to the story than just Ryder.

He has done OK, but I am not sure if I would be THAT bothered if he leaves. I would rather Shelvey stay if it came to a choice. Jonjo offers something different, even if he did have a bad 15 minutes yesterday (are we basing his whole NUFC career on those 15 minutes yesterday?).

Bl00dy Ashley has got us trained to think in terms of either/or. Why can’t we keep Shelvey AND get another midfielder? WE CAN, but it is about the money. Fatman is running us like one of his Tat shops and is obviously not releasing every penny the club earns to Rafa. Far from it. He is running us as a Championship club which is where we will be if this continues.

Technically speaking, Ashley will say he IS letting Rafa spend every penny. That is because he is paying back his “loan” and he will say that doesn’t count. Well it does. And the loan was just a tax dodge anyway. I have said this before but Ashley keeps moaning that he was duped when he bought NUFC and didn’t realise the extent of the debts. Does anybody really believe that? He knew exactly what he was getting into and his “loan” was part of the price and he knew it going in.

  35. I still don’t get why the press go along with the PR B-S. Ashley owns 51% of his BS mouthpiece company – KBA – Keith Bishop and Associates. It is obviously just a siren song for anything The Fatman wants to say.

So they tell The Chronic 4 days before the last accounts were released that the NUFC player payroll was 110 million pounds in The Championship. The Chronic internalize this number and repeat it forevermore. Even though it was manipulated and essentially made up in an accounting trick. The real number was about 70 million if you take out the accounting tricks but Chris “the intern” Waugh and Mark “Ashley’s new Lackey” Douglas just go with what they are told by the PR team and say 110 million. BIGGER NUMBER = MORE CLICKS. Forget that it is a lie!!!!

  37. There’s a scam that goes on in every big city and Ashley uses a version of it with Tat Direct. It is the “GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE” that goes on for 20 years…

Ashley applies this to Tat Direct where they start off with a top marked as 50 quid and say you get a deal because the marked it down to 30. But, wait, let’s cross off that 30 and put on 25! Every info-mercial sales pitch ever!!! Make you think you are getting a bargain but it was never at the top price, ever!!!

That’s the way Ashley runs Tat Direct and also NUFC. We really are fcked until he leaves.

  43. The Burnley win at Bournemouth has put us in a position where we have to rely on Cardiff keeping us up.
Burnley play Cardiff this weekend and the best result for us is obviously a Burnley win.
If Cardiff win that game we would certainly be in a relegation scrap and would need to get something from Brighton away and /or something from our home game with Southampton to be absolutely safe.
I remember when Shearer took over as caretaker manager when we seemed in a safe position needing 6 points from 8 games to avoid relegation. He failed , winning 5 points and relegation.
Even after his failure , Shearer was still hoping to be given the managers’ job on a permanent basis but thankfully it didn’t happen.
Rafa is supposedly on £6m per year. For that sort of money I would hope we could have a manager keeping us safely in mid table all season , not dipping in and out of the relegation places throughout the season.

If that is not bad enough then the players mentioned are a sideways move anyway and we might as well keep what we have.

I give up, I will just have to make peace with the fact that The Chronic will print any wild and untrue made up **** if it gets them clicks and that The Lee Ryder School of Journalism now has a new graduate in Andrew Musgrove.

  47. Getting back to what Kimtoon and Sidekick are saying, that we will get no more points for the remainder of the season. That would be 7 losses on the bounce and with the teams we are playing that is extremely unlikely.

Leicester do seem to be a bogey team for us and Brendan has given them a lift with Vardy back in form. Using the NUFC do the opposite to what you expect logic that obviously means a win there.

  48. I am sorry to harp on but this is really a joke from the Chronic:

Part 1: the players they say we want from West Brom are all pushing 30. Rafa might get his way with 1 (Rondon), but more than that and it really is not a fight worth picking.

Part 2: Chronic (podcast) are saying we are nervous in front of goal because of Rafa’s situation. On the face of it that might be a decent argument as sometimes if there are problems at work you bring them home and vice versa. Human Nature. But this is NUFC. There are always problems. Rafa’s contract situation has been up in the air all year. We sold Mitro and Fatty trousered the money instead of letting Rafa buy a replacement and we has to sacrifice Gayle for a loanee. Then there was the sale saga and the Almiron transfer which dragged on for 6 weeks. There is always drama at NUFC. If that causes strikers to miss shots then we may as well not turn up because it is always there. Did the behind-the-scenes drama hurt us in the Everton comeback?

  49. I know it must seem that I parse every word the Chronic write. But I would reply that they shouldn’t write such shyte then. They are supposed to have some local knowledge and insight and set themselves up as a voice of the fans. And they have like 8 writers FFS, and they can’t come up with a decent story between them. Their financial articles, in particular, are riddled with mistakes. They even consult so-called experts, usually professors, who don’t know what they are talking about. If I was at their Universities I would ask for my tuition fees back.

  50. Sarri’s precarious managerial situation didn’t seem to stop Eden Hazard there. Indeed, Hazard’s potential move to Madrid didn’t seem to stop him either. Maybe, just maybe, he happens to be a better player than Rondon?

  51. Hazard was brilliant but Hudson-Odio and Loftus-Cheek show the future is bright for England. I am still not totally convinced on Southgate but he will have a wealth of talent starting with the Nations League. You have those 2 plus Kane, Sterling, Alli, Sancho and Foden.

Not sure if any other team in the world has more talent coming through so the England football team might make up for what the politicians are doing to my home country.

Neither Kim or myself said that we would not get any more points this season.
I said that we could be in a relegation scrap if Cardiff beat Burnley this weekend.
If Cardiff went on to win their game in hand they would only be 1 point and goal difference below us.
My suggestion that we would then need to get something from our games against Brighton or Southampton to be absolutely safe is fair comment.
Regarding your little quiz on what team in the World would buy three players from one team in the same window I believe the answer is York City , who took 4 players from Gateshead last Summer and they also took Steve Watson , the Gateshead manager.

  55. Sidekick, i’m not the least bit comfy to be honest, sooner we pick up another win or two the better for my nerves.
All the joy of football has been lost since that man bought us.

Gotta feel for poor florian like, ACL in his other knee gone now. Must be predisposed to injuries to his knees. Lets hope he gets better quickly and stronger, we are so much better with him in the team.

  56. Sidekick: I was just yanking your chain. We have really only had 1 bad performance recently and that was Arsenal. I watched them against Everton and they were terrible. Didn’t even look the same team, but that has been the story of their season with them looking great at home and bad away. We should have got something against Palace so I am not too despondent yet.

I also think that some fans had been going a bit over the top about Rondon like he was Aguero or something. He has been decent but the West Brom fans said it took him 3 or 4 good chances to score and that’s the Rondon we saw against Palace.

  59. Kim – that was my thoughts exactly. The TV money generated by NUFC will cover that loss

  60. I think we will probably play the same team against Leicester with Dummett coming in for Lejeune. I am not sure about playing Fernandez and Lascelles together. Weren’t they the partnership at the start of the season when we were losing so much? Neither seemed to be bad individually but we were still not getting results.

And we didn’t play badly against Palace, we just didn’t take our chances and gave away a stupid penalty. The result always taints the memory of a game for some fans. At this stage it probably is all that matters but it is not like we were outplayed by a pretty talented Palace side (Benteke aside).

Can you believe they spent 30 million on Benteke? He has zero goals this season and 3 in 30 last year. Talk about a loss of confidence.

  61. I am also worried about Maddison and his dead ball ability. Him and Ward-Prowse seem to be the only ones that can take a direct free kick. Thank God we don’t have Ginger Jack with his propensity to give away fouls on the edge of the box. But that is also the reason I would be worried about Fernandez and Lascelles together as both have a tendency to dive in and Lascelles can get out of position and fouls to stop a breakaway. I am a bit worried this will cost us with the pace in the Leicester side if we play Fernandez and Lascelles together.

  62. I know everybody wants an update on Rooney, so here we go 🙂

I watched their 4-0 loss on the weekend when Wayne was sent off. They have VAR which changed it from a yellow to a red for an awful tackle. He has 3 sendings off in MLS and the commentator said he only had 1 in his PL career. Maybe that is VAR and maybe it is because PL Refs gave him (and all Man U players) preferential treatment.

They have him taking corners as well which is a bit Harry Kane at the World Cup-ish.

Lastly, he is looking chunkier than ever. Perhaps it is my TV but he looks about half a stone heavier.

kim, Toon will be safe this season. But you can put your $ on going down next season if you want to make some $. My opinion.

  65. I know I bang on about them a lot, but what the hell are The Chronic up to nowadays? They quote Teamtalk FFS for their scoops. And yesterday they had like a 2,000 word article with some kid (probably 20’s from the photo) who was on football manager and saying what our squad would look like next year based upon transfers he made there. It was a complete joke with players I had never heard of from teams like Genk.

It really was a new low and I can’t even be bothered to link the article. Look on their website if you want to see the biggest travesty of journalism yet.

They have a football staff of about 8 and send 3 of them to matches and then come up with **** like this! Who is the editor? How does this get published? I think Mark Douglas is in charge and he is too busy faux-defending them as not click-baiting to actually read any of the contributions before they are published.

  66. It took him 85 minutes but Martin Tyler managed to pry it in. The camera cut to Solskjaer and good ole Mart says – he knows the value of late goals, most notably in Barcelona when United won the Champions League in 1999.

I suppose it is relevant, but I am still sick of hearing it.

At least you wouldn’t have us loaning out Lejeune and Longstaff like that idiot did. I am highly suspicious that he has even watched an NUFC game and Lejeune is probably out for the 1st month or 2 and The Chronic’s new transfer guru has us loaning him out.
