It has been an eventful Saturday afternoon for Newcastle United loanee Dwight Gayle.
The former NUFC number 9 gave West Brom a half time lead at Villa Park, putting West Brom 1-0 up in their Championship play-off semi final against Aston Villa – only to be sent off in the second half.
The game ended 2-1 to Villa, seeing them go into next week’s second leg with a narrow lead and leaving the Baggies without their top scorer, with Gayle bagging 24 goals so far this season.
Here’s his opening goal, followed by a clip of his second yellow card in the second half:
It was an emphatic finish for his goal, but his second yellow and sending off is a funny one for me.
As a striker, he’s GOT to go for that, his studs aren’t up & he’s barely caught the keeper. Yes he collides with the keeper slightly, but it’s a contact sport after all.
Anyway, Gayle now wont play for West Brom again this season unless they win their 2nd leg (without him) to reach play off final.
Considering Rondon will be available for £16.5m (release clause) if they fail to gain promotion, this could be good news as far as our hopes of signing the Venezuelan permanently are concerned.
