Dutch left-back Jetro Willems has confirmed his plan to leave Eintracht Frankfurt – and has named Newcastle United as one of the club’s interested in signing him.
The comes from the 25-year-old’s latest interview with Dutch television show VTBL, with the former PSV star stating that both ourselves and Roma had shown interest in signing him this summer.
German outlet BILD have also suggested that he is very likely to leave the Bundesliga side this season, with him growing frustrated by the fact almost half of his 36 appearances have come from central midfield this season.
Willems – who has 22 caps for Holland – is in fact a full-back, and his pace, attacking nature and impressive record of over 40 career assists suggests he may be someone well suited to the left wing-back role currently occupied by Matt Ritchie.
He cost Frankfurt just £4.5m in the summer of 2017 so could be available at a cut-price fee once again this summer.
Ritchie has done brilliantly, but there can be no denying that we have a severe lack of depth at left-back, meaning our interest in Willems could make plenty sense.
Another ‘one to watch’ if Rafa signs a new deal in the coming weeks?
