Newcastle ‘hold talks’ with ex-Man Utd reject available on a free – Dubious report

According to a TEAMtalk, Newcastle are one of several clubs to have held talks with former Manchester United reject Nick Powell.

The attacking midfielder is set to be available on a free this summer after rejecting a new deal at Wigan, and although Stoke are said to be the favourites to sign him, it’s claimed we’ve spoken to him about a potential move.

He’s bagged an impressive 23 goals and 15 assists over the last two seasons at Wigan, but I’m struggling to believe this one.

Firstly, it’s hard to know who’d be holding these talks given everything is up in the air at the club right now and, secondly, I’m not convinced we’d even make a move for him.

Last but not least, TEAMtalk tend to be one of the more dubious outlets when it comes to transfer links. They’ve got the odd story right over the years, but these are people that claimed Rafa Benitez wanted to sign a 30-year-old, injury prone Yannick Bolasie just recently for £10m!

The 25-year-old was rated highly at Old Trafford a few years ago, and it is claimed fellow top flight sides Burnley and Brighton have also been in talks, but, if Rafa is to stay this summer, I see him setting the bar a little higher than Powell.

  1. He’s not a bad take on a free transfer. If you are looking at him as first team then maybe not, but as a squad player, he’s a good option imo. We don’t have many creative midfielders or goals behind Rondon and Perez. He’s no risk at all on a free transfer.
