Three Free Agents Newcastle Could Target This Summer

The summer transfer window is primarily known for massive fees, but much of the smarter business that is done during the off-season is mainly done with players that don’t need a transfer fee. One of the most significant moves this summer has already included Aaron Ramsey moving from Arsenal to Juventus for nothing; courtesy of the Bosman rule.

Other examples of successful free transfers include James Milner to Liverpool, Sol Campbell to Arsenal, and Demba Ba to the Toon; and they’re just the Premier League examples. But which players could Newcastle look at this summer that could help build a squad for the coming season in the Premier League?

Daniel Sturridge

The one man that is continuously linked with a move to St James’ Park every summer is available for nothing once his Liverpool contract runs out. It could be a masterstroke of an idea to bring the Champions League winner to the club since there is no doubting his ability. The questions that surround the Englishman are regarding his fitness and ability to stay fit throughout the season.

The 29-year-old’s career looked to be in tatters following a disastrous loan spell at West Bromwich Albion for the second half of the 2017-18 season which ended in the club being relegated, and Sturridge only playing for the club on six occasions. However, he enjoyed somewhat of a renaissance during the Reds title challenge last season and could be worth the chance considering Newcastle’s attacking options.

Danny Welbeck

The England striker has now reached a crossroads in his career where the next move is crucial for him. After falling to make the grade at Manchester United, he was sold to Arsenal; where he enjoyed success by winning the FA Cup and Community Shield. However, the arrival of Unai Emery at the Emirates meant that there was no longer the playing time that he had grown accustomed to.

Newcastle would be an excellent choice for the England striker; especially when you consider he is only 28-years-old. The versatility of Welbeck means that he can operate on either wing as well as through the middle. The Geordie faithful will quickly take to Welbeck due to the never-ending work rate that he puts in for the team.

Gary Cahill

The former Chelsea defender has won everything that there is to win at club level, but after eight seasons with the Blues, he has been deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge. The abilities of Cahill could see him get into any team’s back four beyond the top four and Newcastle should test the waters and see if they could persuade him on another season in the top flight.

The 33-year-old was made Chelsea captain for the 2017-18 campaign following the retirement of John Terry but failed to hold down a regular spot when Maurizio Sarri was appointed Blues boss. The aggressive defensive work that he is capable of and aerial ability would be excellent assets to add to the Toon squad, giving him another option alongside Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar while Florian Lejeune is out injured.

Any move for these three players would be widely well received by the Toon, and football gamblers can then take advantage of the Betfred promo code to maximise returns on future bets for all Newcastle fixtures.
