According to the Shields Gazette, Newcastle plan to sign SIX players between now and August 8th – with Brazilian striker Joelinton and Nice winger Allan Saint-Maximin named as two targets.
Considering Charnley is haggling over Bruce’s compensation fee and the fact we have LESS than 4 weeks left to do business, this is a serious case of ‘I’ll believe this when I see it’!
Nevertheless, Liam Kennedy’s report states that the club are in for TWO forwards, a winger, two full-backs (claiming a left-back is a priority) and a goalkeeper.
The report also claims that Head of Recruitment has already lined up a list of targets, with Hoffenheim striker Joelinton and Nice winger Allan Saint-Maximin said to feature prominently on that shortlist.
The pair have been linked on several occasions over the past few weeks – despite the fact we have been left manager-less following Rafa’s exit – however neither would come cheap.
It’s absolutely essential that we spend big and sign well to replace Rondon and Perez, but you would have to question A) whether these two would join Steve Bruce’s NUFC and B) whether we’d pay the sort of money it would take to sign both (£50-£60m!).
Both the Chronicle and Sky Sports have claimed recently that we have a ‘couple of deals’ lined up, with Mark Douglas hinting at the possible arrival of Joelinton.
This all but confirms the idea that the new ‘head coach’ will only have so much say on transfers, with it seeming as though Steve Nickson is taking up a Graham Carr style role at the club following Rafa’s exit.
Either way, we need to seriously pull our finger out if we plan to bring in SIX much needed new signings over the next 25 days!
Fatley and Penfold might sign these players, but they will have been bought expressly with an eye on flogging them for a profit as soon as possible. There will be no thoughts on how all these players fit in a team together, thoughts of building a team to win things, or even any thoughts from said players about settling at the club and showing loyalty, because why would they. The reason McClaren was given so much money comparatively to Rafa, is because he had no say whatsoever and we can see what price those players went for in the end. And to be clear, yes a lot of clubs keep an eye on what the appreciation in value of a player will be, but not many so cynically buy players in the almost immediate hope of putting them in the shop window, with no thoughts on team building or progression.

Give over. Ashley’s transfer policy makes both good footballing and business sense. Players use our club as a stepping stone. We are not one of the very top teams who can hold on to top class players for long.

Forget Bruce, Pardew, moyes etc. Let’s get Gaby Logan for coach duties. She knows a bit and is better to look at than the crew the creature is targeting .

And is there a more useless chief executive than Charnley?
