According to both the Telegraph and the Chronicle, Steve Bruce wants to bring Andy Carroll back to Newcastle United – IF he can prove his fitness this summer.
They report that Bruce wants to sign TWO strikers before the transfer window closes on August 8th, but state he will monitor his fitness over the coming weeks and could sign the free-agent (following his release from West Ham) at some point next month IF he’s found to have recovered well from ankle surgery.
The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards claims that Bruce is also keen to sign a winger, a midfielder and a full-back over the next few weeks – although we’ll have to get our skates on if he wants this PLUS two strikers, with there being just over 2 and a half weeks left to do business.
What must also be emphasised here is the fact this would be a deal done OUTSIDE the transfer window, with both reporting that Bruce wants two new strikers (one being Joelinton) signed before he makes a potential move for the 30-year-old.
Either way, it’s officially Groundhog Day! First we had talk of a takeover and now we’ve had the first Andy Carroll story of the summer. What next? Bas Dost?
All jokes aside, I would be delighted to have Carroll back on Tyneside – BUT only if he arrived on the right conditions. He’d need to be on a pay as you play contract and would also need to be joining as our 3rd or 4th choice striker – and NOT as our main back up option to the likes of Joelinton.
I genuinely don’t think I’ve seen another striker more devastating and dominant in the air, but he’d be absolutely no use to us injured.
If the free strikers going this summer I’d sooner go after Welbeck or Sturridge personally.
But everyone knows a fit Andy Carroll is a dangerous option to have in the squad.
I’d take a half for Carroll over a fully fit Joselu any day.
