Steve Bruce interested in bizarre move for Premier League defender – Report

Steve Bruce is interested in bringing Burnley defender Ben Gibson to St James’ Park, according to the Northern Echo.

This comes after TEAMtalk also reported yesterday that Bruce was keen to sign the former Middlesborough defender, however it’s a move that makes very little sense.

He may be 26, meaning he’d just about fit into Mike Ashley’s buying policy, but I’d seriously question why on earth we’d be looking at signing another centre-back.

If there’s one area of the pitch we’re well stocked in, both in terms of depth and quality, it’s this one. With that in mind, it would seem silly to be focusing on a signing in this position when there’s so many other key holes to fill in the 18 days that remain of the transfer window.

Not only that, I don’t see why Burnley would be looking to sell – especially when fellow centre-back James Tarkowski has been tipped to make a big money move to Leicester should Harry Maguire join Man Utd.

The Northern Echo claim that Bruce has been a long-term admirer of Gibson, but with Lascelles, Lejeune, Schar, Fernandez, Dummett and Clark all being on our books, a new centre-back is the lest of our worries!

  1. Schar and Fernandez have been linked with moves to Italy – I suspect this Gibson deal would only be pursued if one of them left.
