Fabian Schar is at it again, with the classy centre-back scoring a stunning goal in Switzerland’s Euro 2020 qualifier in Ireland last night.
This is the defender’s second goal in just six days for club and country, with him also scoring in our 1-1 draw with Watford last weekend.
Here’s the goal, captured in front of the Sky cameras in Dublin, showing the NUFC star not only instigate the attack but finish sublimely after some impressive interplay with his Swiss teammates:
An outstanding team goal and emphatic finish that any striker would be proud of, although it wasn’t enough to see his country earn a win over the Republic of Ireland in the end, with his opener being cancelled out by David McGoldrick in the 85th minute.
Schar doesn’t get enough credit for what a good defender he is, with him being a fierce competitor at the back who reads the game very well, however his ability on the ball is second to none.
Not only is he able to create from deep and carry the ball out of defence effortlessly, he finishes like a seasoned forward, giving sides a secret attacking weapon from the back.
To think we picked this guy up for just £3m last summer. He must be worth well over ten times that now in this day and age!
Hardly stunning Olly.
I appreciate that as Toon fans any goal is special but let’s not get carried away.
