The Chronicle have ran an “exclusive” regarding our transfer plans in January.
It’s claimed that transfer meetings are already taking place and Bruce is eyeing up Marseille’s 19 year old centre back Boubacar Kamara (valued at £16m!), while the head coach is also keen to add another goalkeeper to his ranks.
The first team squad is blessed with centre back’s at the moment, undoubtedly the strongest area of the squad, as well as promising youngster Keiland Watts coming through.
Then to the goalkeeping situation, is a new keeper needed? Dubravka is on the verge of signing a lucrative new deal, Darlow is expected to sign a new deal, Elliot will probably leave as his contract is up this summer, but then highly rated youngsters Freddie Woodman and Jake Turner are also still on the books.
In short, and given the clear short comings in other areas of pitch, it seems these are the last areas we need to strengthen. We need proven goal scorers to help take the pressure off Joelinton and Almiron, a Shelvey replacement and increased options out wide.
The particular line that worries me from the Chronicle’s “exclusive” is this one:
“Newcastle aren’t aiming to hold major surgery in January but will look to add a couple of new faces if the price is right – and a competitive transfer kitty has been put aside with Bruce keen to add what he has already described as “extra quality” should it become available”
I hope this basically doesn’t mean “if we’re in the relegation zone we’ll spend”, as that’s exactly what happened in 2015/16..and we all know what happened next.
