After another dismal display from Newcastle United this season, the latest – A 5-0 hammering at the hands of Leicester City, supporters are resigning themselves to a third relegation in twelve years.
Newcastle supporters packed out the away end at the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the pouring rain. They witnessed a side that simply surrendered.
Under Rafael Benitez Newcastle were a side that were tough to beat, tough to break down. Under Steve Bruce it is the polar opposite. Newcastle never started waving the white flag under Benitez, 7 games into the new season and the white flags are waving furiously.
Bruce has been milking the win he recorded away to spurs last month, the focus should be Benitez-esque, taking it one game at a time, not dwelling on previous results.
The players do not appear to know what their roles are, it is blatantly obvious. Isaac Hayden went over to the dugout against Brighton, to ask what position the team were playing – That screams of poor management.
Miguel Almiron sums up Newcastle’s struggles so far this season. The Paraguayan is being played out of position and looks a shadow of the player that arrived in January.
Bruce acknowledged that he would have a tough job on his hands, when he took over from Benitez. However, Bruce has completely underestimated the challenges he faces at Newcastle.
There is a naivety in how Newcastle set up, Joelinton is far too isolated up front, the Brazilian has a thankless task on his hands. The players look utterly bemused as to how they should play.
Newcastle are in real danger, if the club fail to act sooner rather than later things will only get worse. After a string of awful performances this season, the thought of things becoming even worse will make Newcastle supporters shiver with fear.
Bruce is out of his depth and Newcastle are sinking fast. Attendances are falling and Sundays surrender to Leicester will do nothing to improve the mood around St. James’ Park.
Benitez drummed his tactics into the Newcastle players, drummed them in until it was second nature to them. To go from a manager with such attention to detail to a manager with no game plan and no tactical awareness is nothing short of scandalous.
Newcastle will suffer a third relegation this season unless things change and it would have to be a dramatic change. The club do not deserve such a loyal fan base. Twelve years of utter misery is now wearing thin for many supporters, who are now voting with their feet.
