According to the Mirror, former Newcastle boss Chris Hughton has rejected the Stoke City job, with him eyeing a return to the Premier League instead.
This comes after the Potters’ woeful start to the new Championship season, with current manager Nathan Jones expected to be sacked in the next 24 hours after Wednesday night’s 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield left them rock bottom with just 2 points from their opening 10 games.
Hughton – who has been out of work since May after being sacked by Brighton – had held talks with the club, however he’s believed to have turned down the job in the hope of landing another top flight job at some point in the near future.
It’s no surprise they went for Hughton, with him having a terrific record in the Championship after earning automatic promotions with Newcastle, Norwich and Brighton, however it’s also no surprise that he’s waiting it out for another Premier League job. Dare I say it, he’d do a better job than Steve Bruce?!
Stoke’s demise should serve as a real warning to Newcastle United chiefs. This is a side that were challenging in the top 10 of the Premier League and had the likes of Marko Arnautovic and Xherdan Shaqiri on their books not so long ago, yet they’re on track for League One just a year later, showing how quickly clubs can fall under the wrong management after relegation.
Daft story – and if it were true , daft decision by Hughton.
Hughton is, and always has been a good Championship Manager . But he’s a poor Prem manager.
In charge of Newcastle in Championship – good, in the Prem bad.
Birmingham Championship good, Norwich Prem – Bad. Brighton Prem bad.
If he has been offered a good position with Stoke and turned it down waiting for a Prem offer that just shows the poor judgement the restricts his top flight capabilities.
Hughton is “nice-guy” type gently spoken motivator who can get that little bit more from a team with minimal talent, but only for a few months.
Maybe he’s waiting for the nod for that toon return.
