The bargain fee NUFC will pay to sign Jetro Willems permanently…if he continues to impress

As revealed by The Chronicle’s Mark Douglas, Newcastle will have the chance to sign Frankfurt loanee Jetro Willems for “less than £6m” next summer.

This comes from their latest online Q&A, with one fan asking about the possibility of the on loan Dutch wing back signing a permanent deal.

Here’s what Douglas had to say in response, suggesting there’s a bargain to be had for NUFC if the 25-year-old continues to impress:

“I’ve been really impressed by his attitude, his attacking instincts and his workrate.

“There’s a permanent deal already agreed if he continues to impress and it’s less than £6million so it looks like good value to me.”

If that is true about the fixed asking price, if I was Steve Bruce and Lee Charnley, I’d be looking to do that deal in January, never mind waiting until next summer.

Willems is one those players who has been linked with the club a lot in the last few years, almost falling into the Bas Dost category, and indeed an attacking left back/wing back was on Rafa’s wish list for years. Now it seems we finally have a good one, with Willems being a natural in that position.

He possesses the perfect physical attributes and has a point to prove after an indifferent spell in Germany saw him lose his place in the Dutch national squad.

Willems himself has said he would like to be involved in Euro 2020 next summer. Aside from his assist against Manchester United and his brilliant goal at Anfield, his all round performances have been improving week by week. Someone actually said to me after his assist on Sunday, that if that footwork had come from Saint Maximin we’d have all lost our minds.

When Matt Ritchie is fit again Bruce is going to have a very nice selection headache.
