The shock Jetro Willems stat that no Premier League full-back has bettered so far this season..

According to the statistics, Jetro Willems has been one of the best left-backs in the league when he’s played this season.

The Dutchman has faced 26 ground duels so far, and he’s won 23 of them – with this 88% success rate the best from any Premier League full back as things stand.

Not only this, his attacking stats have been very impressive too, with him bagging 1 goal and 2 assists in 5 starts in all competitions. The goal was a memorable one, seeing him open the scoring in stunning fashion with a right-footed thunderbolt at Anfield, while his two assists came at St James’ Park, seeing him cut clever balls back for Yoshinori Muto (against Leicester in the Carabao Cup) and Matty Longstaff (against Man Utd in our last league outing).

The defensive stats are what should encourage NUFC fans most, however.

He was known for his attacking skills at PSV, playing a part in 37 goals in 144 appearances in the Dutch league, however several Bundesliga reporters had voiced concerns over his ‘defensive frailties’ following his loan move from Frankfurt over the summer.

He has moments where he switches off and does not seem a natural defender, often having one eye on getting forward instead, however his success rate when it comes to ground duels is particularly impressive, showing how he’s been competitive in the tackle and difficult to get past.

Encouraging signs from the 25-year-old – who could be a real bargain next summer at a reported fee of between £6-£10m.

  1. Seriously?

One cherry picked statistic makes him one of the best left backs in the league when he’s played this season?

What about when he hasn’t played? How does he rate then?

Just out of interest, is he still one of the best left backs if you include the “not knowing where he is supposed to be and standing there like a deer stuck in the headlights giving the ball away against Arsenal in the first game of the season” stats?
