Ex-NUFC duo land new jobs – & they’ll be on their way to Sunderland in 10 days time

Ex-Mag Sol Campbell has been named manager of Southend United – and he’ll be back in the North-East to take on Sunderland next weekend.

Joining him will also be former NUFC striker Andy Cole, who’s agreed to be part of his coaching team at the League One side.

Campbell watched his new side get thrashed 7-1 at home to Doncaster on Tuesday night, but will take charge of his first game against promotion chasing Ipswich Town on Saturday, followed by a trip to the Stadium of Light next weekend.

Campbell, who made only 8 appearances for The Toon after singing on a free transfer in 2010, has previously managed Macclesfield Town, but left the club by mutual consent over the summer after guiding them to safety on the final day of the League Two season.

The former England international takes his side to the Stadium of Light next weekend in a battle of two newly appointed managers, with Phil Parkinson’s side likely to be full of confidence after a 5-0 win over Tranmere on Tuesday night.

Let’s hope Sol can help stick it to the Mackems that weekend – it will certainly be the best thing he has done for us Newcastle fans!

  1. Unfortunately Andy Cole has no chance of being able to coach others to do what he did on the pitch.

His movement and touch were by far the best around at the time and unlike our strikers these days if he had 4 shots at goal he scored with 3 of them.

He was what we called at the time a goal moocher and was on top oof anything that was loose in the box. In addition to all that he had a turn of speed and timing that defenders had serious problems with AND he was just as likely to bang one in from outside the box as he was to chip the keeper.

Andy Cole going into coaching is like someone trying to teach you how to win the lottery.

Plus of course – if there was anyone out there who could benefit from his coaching he sure as heII wouldn’t be playing for Southend United.
