Jonjo Shelvey is being tipped to sign a new contract in the coming weeks, if reports in the Daily Star are to be believed.
Ian Murtagh’s piece claims that West Ham and Crystal Palace are both keen to sign the midfielder, but reveals that he’s now ‘close’ to penning a new deal at St James’ Park.
He currently has 18 months left on his current contract and has spoken many times about how settled he and his family are on Tyneside.
Certainly this news comes after Shelvey’s best performance in a long time at West Ham, and remarkably he is actually our top goal scorer now with 2. For all his undoubted ability, Shelvey’s biggest problem is his consistency.
It seems fairly certain that he’ll start against Bournemouth at the weekend after his display in London, and another commanding performance pulling the strings is just what we need.
I’ve written about him already a couple of times this year, and while I am an admirer of his talents, my biggest issue with him is how easy it is for other teams to defend against us when he is in the team.
When he drops deep and takes the ball off defenders toes, we lose all momentum and teams just stifle him. That wasn’t the case on Saturday, he was getting the ball in advanced positions and creating chances.
More of the same on Saturday!
