NUFC duo to clash in EURO decider, Longstaff shines & Yedlin injured? – International round up

Ciaran Clark and Martin Dubravka could be set to face each other for a place at EURO 2020, with both Slovakia and the Republic of Ireland likely to meet after securing semi-final play-off spots this week.

This comes after Dubravka kept a clean sheet in Slovakia’s 2-0 win over Azjerbijan on Tuesday, while Ciaran Clark featured as Ireland fought back to clinch a 1-1 draw with Denmark in Dublin.

Both results weren’t enough to help them earn an automatic place in EURO 2020, but they look set to meet again in March via the play-offs – although UEFA do state that this may yet change.

Elsewhere for Newcastle, Matty Longstaff made his full England debut for the U-20’s in their 3-0 win over Iceland.

Longstaff did make an appearance off the bench in The Three Lion’s crushing 4-0 win against Portugal but this time he was handed a starting role and the number 4 shirt.

He seemed to impress too, with The Athletic’s Chris Waugh praising his ‘all-action display’ which saw him ‘dictate the play from deep’.

Across the pond, DeAndre Yedlin featured for the USA in their 4-0 win away to Cuba, with the Americans leapfrogging rivals Canada to go top of Group A of the CONCACAF Nations League. That said, there were a few USMNT fans claiming on social media that he ‘limped off’ in the second half, so that could be one to watch.

Miguel Almiron also played the full game in a dull 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia in Riyadh, as he looked to add to his goal he scored against Bulgaria last Thursday.

Emil Krafth’s Sweden and Fabian Schar’s Switzerland have also secured qualification for Euro 2020 next summer, although neither Magpies defender featured for their side, with the former becoming a dad and the latter staying on Tyneside to recover from a recent injury.
