According to reports in France, Aston Villa have submitted a loan bid to sign former Newcastle flop Islam Slimani.
To say the Algerian has had a mixed few years since his disastrous spell at St James’ Park is an understatement – meaning he could be a risky signing in Villa’s bid to sign a striker to replace the injured Wesley Moraes.
He struggled badly at Fenerbahce across 2018/19, scoring just one league for the Turkish giants, however he’s doing brilliantly in Ligue 1 with Monaco this season, bagging 7 goals and 7 assists in 13 league appearances.
With his most recent form in mind, it would be a risk for Villa – especially when his last stint in England saw him struggle with injuries and poor discipline at Newcastle United.
I was actually quite happy when we signed him back in January 2018. He’s a handful on his day and looked surprisingly quick for his 6ft 3′ frame, however he couldn’t keep fit and ended up getting banned for a kick out at West Brom’s Craig Dawson when he finally did!
With him reportedly falling out with Monaco’s manager and eyeing a return to England, it’ll be interesting to see how he gets on at Aston Villa should news of their loan bid be true.
