Journalist shares update on Matty Longstaff’s future – NUFC are pushing their luck now..

Matty Longstaff may be going from strength to strength with Newcastle United – scoring his third goal of the season on Tuesday night – but his future is yet to be secured.

With the 19-year-old’s contract set to expire at the end of the season and a new deal yet to be agreed, the Chronicle’s Mark Douglas has shared an update on the local lad’s future.

He suggests that his representatives are trying to get the club to recognise his contribution in their contract offer, suggesting NUFC chiefs may be taking his age and eagerness to sign for his boyhood club for granted.

Here’s what Douglas had to say during the Chronicle’s latest Q&A when a Newcastle fans asked: Why is it taking so long to get Matty Longstaff signed to a new contract? Should have been sorted the week after his debut:

“It’s a good question.

Remember Longstaff’s brother Sean has also been involved in contract talks which have stalled , so that might have an impact as the pair of them are represented by the same agent.

“Matty’s a huge talent and his representatives are looking to get his contribution recognised as such.

“I’ve always felt he’ll re-sign for his boyhood club but Newcastle shouldn’t take that for granted, especially with clubs from the Bundesliga checking the younger Longstaff out.

“They have to get this deal done.”

We’d be crazy to let such a talented and tenacious young player leave – especially when he’s one of our own – but the time it’s taking to get him tied up to a new deal is starting to grate on fans; and rightly so.

I’m sure he’s desperate to sign a long-term deal on Tyneside – he’s living the dream after all – but it feels like the club are abusing the fact he’s so keen to stay and may be offering him derisory terms as a result.

This is me just speculating, but why else would he be stalling on a new contract?

I understand why we’ve not suddenly agreed to make Sean Longstaff one of our top earners as he’s still got plenty to prove, however a new deal for his young brother should be a no brainer at this stage of his contract.

Get it done!
