NUFC confirm key player is back in training – but absent duo set to miss Chelsea clash

The club have revealed that Fabian Schar is back in training after recovering from a hamstring injury he picked up in the New Year’s Day fixture with Leicester.

The Swiss international has an outside chance of returning against Chelsea this weekend, but two players who look set to miss out are Paul Dummett and Dwight Gayle after the club confirmed they both missed Thursday’s session.

It’s positive news on Schar, however. Having him back in the ranks as well as captain Jamaal Lascelles would be a major boost ahead of Chelsea’s visit to St James’ Park.

After sharing pictures from Thursday’s training session, the club released the following injury update:

Fabian Schär was back in training as Newcastle United prepared for Saturday’s Premier League visit of Chelsea.

The Swiss defender hasn’t played since he limped off against Leicester City on New Year’s Day, but is closing in on a return along with Allan Saint-Maximin and Jonjo Shelvey.

Paul Dummett and Dwight Gayle missed Thursday’s session after picking up injuries against Wolves last weekend, but Steve Bruce has a lot more options than he did earlier in the month ahead of the clash with Frank Lampard’s side.

It’s also great to hear both Allan Saint-Maximin and Jonjo Shelve are ‘closing in on a return’, with the club also tweeting this picture after Thursday’s training session:

With Saint-Maximin confirming on social media that his stint on the treatment table has come to an end, Bruce must be delighted that he is hearing some positive news for a change as far as injuries are concerned.

I doubt the Frenchman will be risked on Saturday – although he could make the bench – but one player who could return to Bruce’s starting line-up is Jonjo Shelvey.

The midfielder played a cameo role against Rochdale on Tuesday, so could start this weekend after both Longstaff’s have just been forced to play 180 minutes in four days.
