Joey Barton signs ex-NUFC talent heavily linked with January return to St James’ Park

Fleetwood Town boss Joey Barton has signed former Toon youngster Lewis Gibson on loan – a player who was tipped for a return to Tyneside earlier this month.

Ex-Mag Barton has had a steady start to life in management and has made a move for the Everton man, with Gibson desperate to start playing first-team football after a successful spell in the Toffees U23’s.

Gibson helped England to the U-17 World Cup in 2017 and left us to sign for Everton that same summer, but had been growing frustrated with his lack of opportunity on Merseyside under Marco Silva.

This alerted Newcastle to potentially re-signing the player – and it’s been reported since that the good friend of Matty Longstaff’s was keen to return – but he’s since signed a new contract at Goodison and will now spend the rest of the season out in League One.

It would’ve been nice to have another talented local lad on Tyneside, but with our defence without question the strongest area, it’s not as though we could’ve promise the 19-year-old the game time he was desperate for.

We have a young local defender out on loan in Kelland Watts – who is now at Mansfield after an impressive stint at Stevenage – so we’ll have to hope he can be our ‘one for the future’ at the back.

That said, it would be just our luck if Gibson goes on to become a world-beater!
