A few years on from a reluctant move way from his boyhood club, Wes Denton-born striker Adam Armstrong is starting to show exactly why he was once considered one of England’s most promising young strikers.
Despite a few promising loan spells away from St James’ Park, the ex-NUFC striker completed a permanent move to Blackburn rovers for £1.75in August 2018 – a deal that’s now being described as an ‘absolute steal’ by those in Lancashire.
His first season was a steady one, seeing him bag 9 goals and 5 assists in all competitions, however the 23-year-old has stepped it up a level this term – bagging 10 goals and 7 assists already.
Having been involved in 11 goals since December, he’s statistically the Championship’s most in-form player over the past two and a half months – with no second tier player having been played a part in as many goals in that period.
Here’s his latest strike, with this inch perfect drive sending Blackburn to within 3 points of the play-off spots in their 3-0 win over Hull City last night:
Alan Pardew once called ‘the club’s most natural finisher’ back in 2014 and, with goals like that, we’re starting to see why.
He didn’t quite look ready for first-team football when he was still on our books a few years ago – with him performing in League One but struggling to make an impact during loan stint in the second tier – but his recent rise to form is great to see.
It’s bittersweet to see such a talented young Geordie finding form away from St James’ Park, but brilliant to see he’s finally showing what he’s always been capable of.
Keep up this form and he could yet inspire Blackburn to promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs!
