Journalist claims NUFC player is set for his third start of the season vs Crystal Palace

Ian Murtagh of the Daily Star is reporting that Dwight Gayle could be in line for a start at his former club Crystal Palace this weekend, if he proves his fitness.

Gayle hasn’t played since pulling up with his hamstring in the first half of our 1-1 draw at Wolves back at the start of December. Gayle looked very sharp that day in front three with Joelinton and Almiron, and was heavily involved in Miggy’s goal.

He started the move with a brilliant chested pass then laid it off into the Paraguayan’s path with a filthy little flick.

We lost all our attacking impetus after Gayle went off at Molenieux, and we certainly need something in the coming weeks, with us failing to score or even threaten to in our last three Premier League games, and Joelinton’s struggles continuing.

Gayle is certainly one of those players who divides opinion, and has throughout his career been labelled as too good enough for the Championship and not good enough for the Premier League.

Steve Bruce has constantly championed him since he took over but has rarely used him even when he has been fit. The question if he does start this weekend is, will it be alongside Joelinton or as a straight replacement for him. The latter seems more likely as the mere thought of dropping Almiron or Saint Maximin will surely make every Newcastle fans blood run cold.

Yoshinori Muto is also back in training in what is a major boost for everyone, considering we’ve played the last few games without a striker on the bench. A situation that is frankly ridiculous considering that was the case for most of the transfer window with Andy Carroll also unavailable. Anyway a very important few games coming up with games against the teams in and around us.
