Joey Barton becomes the second ex-Mag to make Sunderland look silly in the past 4 days

After James Perch’s Mansfield knocked the Mackems out of the FA Cup over the weekend, there’s now been yet another ex-Mag get one over Sunderland.

This time it’s Joey Barton, whose Fleetwood Town side came from behind to beat Sunderland in the Papa John’s EFL trophy on Tuesday night.

The former Toon star, who is usually the pantomime villain whenever he plays the Mackems, claimed victory to go top of Group A and put his side through to the next round.

Here’s a reminder of what he said earlier this year when the Stadium of Light went berserk after Sunderland salvaged a last minute point over the ‘mighty Fleetwood Town’.

It may have only been in the ‘Papa John’s trophy’, but Barton got one over them once again last night, despite admitting before the game he’d play his youngsters and fringe men as they’d already qualified for the next round before kick off.

A James Hill own goal handed the Black Cats the lead inside 15 minutes but a quick-fire, second half double just after half-time from Barrie McKay and Mark Duffy was enough to give Fleetwood the win.

Defeat leaves Sunderland staring down their second cup defeat in a matter of days after James Perch’s Mansfield Town dumped them out of the FA Cup first round at the weekend with a 1-0 win.
