Game on! Stevenage v Newcastle.

Broadhall Way.
FA Cup action from Stevenage.
It’s FA Cup time again as the competition starts to hot up with the introduction of the big boys from The Championship and Premier League.

The competition itself started way back in August as semi-professional outfits and amateur sides battled it out to get through the qualifying rounds and into the competition proper. League One and Two sides were introduced back in November, but it is the third round that always grabs the spotlight.

It is one of those League Two teams that Newcastle face this evening as they head to Stevenage for what is a rematch of the tie that occured in the same round back in 1998. The match will be brodcast on ESPN here in the UK, and I believe it is scheduled for transmission in the USA aswell.

For those aren’t fortunate enough to be able to gain acces to a TV set to watch the game on, there will hopefully be some links knocking around where you can catch a stream. A quick look on MyP2P.eu would suggest that there are plenty of streams to be had, but if you find a decent link then please feel free to share it with your fellow Newcastle fans in the comments below.

For a more detailed preview of the match you can read my match preview where you can take in some team news and a bit of background about the fixture.

Newcastle have named a surpsisingly strong starting XI for the match, which indicates their intention to be professional, get the job done, and ensure that we are in the hat for the fourth round draw that will take place tomorrow afternoon.

Howay the lads!

Stevenage: Chris Day, Ronnie Henry, Jon Ashton, Mark Roberts, Scott Laird, Lawrie Wilson, John Mousinho, Michael Bostwick, Stacy Long, Peter Winn, Chris Beardsley.

Subs: Ashley Bayes, Luke Foster, Charlie Griffin, Yemi Obubade, Ben May, David Bridges, Rob Sinclair.

Newcastle: Tim Krul, Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, James Perch, Wayne Routledge, Kevin Nolan, Alan Smith, Joey Barton, Peter Lovenkrands, Leon Best.

Subs: Ole Soderberg, Tamas Kadar, Shane Ferguson, Danny Guthrie, Cheik Tiote, Phil Airey, Nile Ranger.

  1. What a masterstroke by Pardew to play the long ball game and try to outmuscle a low division team, the only elements they are good at…

  2. Not just that. The balance of the team was poor. Long ball, clueless dross. Best off at half time?! I don’t get what he was trying to do.

I’m sorry, but Pardew and his players had a stinker today.

  3. Wow, Shame about Tiote hopefully any one with a brain (short supply at the FA) will recind that.

Glad to see “Willo” back in place of that liability Taylor… 🙄

  4. on a technical blog matter–I don’t like the “reply” button. You have to back track to see the replies and it disrupts the ongoing flow of discussion.

Obviously it’s very early to judge Pardew’s tactics, but I feel like he got them very badly wrong today.

  5. People talking about appealing the Tiote red card need to wake up. That will NEVER get rescinded. It was a good tackle, but it looked extremely reckless and the player rolling around on the floor didn’t help.

  6. Even I must admit that WIlliamson was shocking today. At fault for the first and third goal (although the first was just bad luck)

  7. Smith has been a passenger at this level for most of his career. Not because of his work rate, which is excellent, because he lacks quality, a specialism, and just isn’t good enough. The fact that like C.H, now Pardew is saying he will stay leads me to believe his attitude and mouth is enough to con them into thinking a huge part of their wage budget should be spent on this man. This season he has done nothing to suggest to me he should stay at this fooball club and if Leeds made an offer we are FOOLS if we knocked them back.

  8. nee probs Toonsy…just a bad comment in light of the cuffing that we have just received from a second division side….Just bad taste mate..

  9. Tbh that is the legacy of Hughton more than anything else and I think tonight we were just ****. Against West Ham we had far better football than this and it certainly wasn’t long ball.

      (Quote)

  10. Deb-A scary thought, but the Tiote red will not be over ruled. The only change from tonight that we’ll see at the Derby is Carroll for Best, providing he’s fit. If not? It’s the 11 we saw tonight.

  11. Yes, BUT they are lower in the league… (this is where I would put a roll eyes emoticon, but I don’t know how)

      (Quote)

  12. agreed there lacedaemonian. Smith must be laughing all the way to the bank. If we can get Leeds to take him in part exchange we should snap there hands off.

  13. I’m just struggling to see the logic mate.

Shrewsbury are a worse team because they play at the same level?

I would argue that this is Stevenage’s first football league season whereas Shrewsbury are established already.

  14. I’d rather Pards experiment with tactics in the Cup games than the League games. At least he now knows one more way NOT to win a footy match. Roll on the Mackems.

      (Quote)

  15. I don’t recall the last time I saw him contribute anything in a game. Is he not embarrassed to turn up to work?

      (Quote)

  16. sorry mate….! I’m not in a mood for jokes, quite bitter at the mo, non of these turkeys deserve to wear the stripes of my team..

      (Quote)

  17. Is Tiote really suspended for the Derby game? I thought if you got a card in a Cup game that it didn’t carry over to the League. ???

      (Quote)

  18. Of all the players i would blame he would be last.

Perch and Routledge frankly i would be disgusted to see them in black and white again, Williamson would be on the first train back to Torquay and Smith would be allowed to go for nowt…

      (Quote)

  19. CC aye…you’re right, I’m just being a bit bitter and twisted. At the same time, one should expect more from someone being touted as a must for the England squad…

      (Quote)

  20. I still look at it this way. Since he’s been appointed, Pardews lost 2 games, Spurs and City. Won 3 games Liverpool, Wigan and West Ham. Lost FA banana skin.

Would C.H have even won the 3 league games the way things were going?

      (Quote)

  21. I know Pardew getting a load of stick for this-but hey at least we know Barton can’t play on the left eh 😀 Nah but if he was looking to mix things up for the future well, at least he messed around with formatio ntoday and not in a league match eh? Still I really don’t get why fergie wasn’t on, in either left mid or left back, propper weird. Regarding this being basically our first team, well Barton on the right, and the influx of Enrique for the scum game, Jonas will hopefully back and that shows that despite his lack of end product we actually miss him massively on the left, there was just no running coming from the team and he’s the only one who can do it. Routledge showed he’s not for this level. Staylor for a shaky Williamson, Harps for a shaky Krul, Ameobi for a terribly quiet lovenkrands and then we’ll be a totally different team….hopefully.

      (Quote)

  22. You’d think that they’d have policed the away end slightly better so that none of our lads could get on the pitch. I seriously doubt that’s a Stevenage fan though sadly. Doesn’t make us look any better if that is the case. We put in a performance that is beyond pathetic and then one of our lot assaults one of their players on the field?

      (Quote)

  23. Munich

I suppose but why move him to the left where he can play those angled balls that have been so effective.

The thing im really disappointed about is Tiote we are badly lacking for the Sunderland match, If Larsson does sign im assuming we will move Barton back inside

Im not bothered about the result the performance was dire but i would have taken that embarassment to get 6 points from Wigan and Wham…

  24. I’ve got an article on that coming up 😉

I worte it during the football as it was more interesting than watching that shyte!

  25. A night to forget.

A couple of hours ago I was think hehe mackems, won’t happen to us. WRONG. Easy to forget just how good these teams are when they’re pumped up for it.

      (Quote)

  26. And terrible headlines. Tiote off for a tackle that the press will no doubt say was an assault in itself, they’ll tear our performance to bits and then they’ve got that to stick their teeth into. One idiot drags the whole club through the mud.

      (Quote)

  27. Lads and lasses, just for info, there is absolutely NOWT on German text or tv regarding this issue.

      (Quote)

  28. nice toonsy.its bloody past 2 here and sat up watching that shyte.absolute waste of time, well except for the barton cracker i guess…..

      (Quote)

  29. That’s just the half of it. Barton will be slaughtered for throwing the ball in to the back of the Stevenage players’ head. The press will do their best to get him another 3 match ban for that. Silly, silly stuff. On the upside, Ziani and Larsson seem to be on their way. Tiote has gone for three game so Barton can play in the middle for a while. I suppose this is why, like Pardew said, we need players in urgently.

      (Quote)

  30. I think after a 5-0 win, it’s very easy to fall flat on your face if your not 100% proffesional like. It’s like when team get a heavy defeat the next game they come out thirst for blood almost. Tonight we looked a bit hungover.

      (Quote)

  31. the guy who swung the punch must be totally radged ! I have NEVER seen that happen before. Man we’re gonna get crucified over this.

      (Quote)

  32. Bingo!

Credit to Stevenage. They played well and deserved progression in the cup.

Some were getting annoyed with their fans, but it’s all pantomime really. It’s their one chance to really stick it to the so called, “Bigger clubs”. This is their moment.

      (Quote)

  33. Tiote suspended is a blow. We had no energy or drive without him, Jonas and Enrique. For me it showed how much they carry some of our lads with their running.

      (Quote)

  34. Doubt it. They have FA Cup humiliation + revenge for the battering we gave them. I would happily take a draw now.

      (Quote)

  35. Aye, they deserve their moment but they were going on at the game like they were gods gift. They played well but the fact we played terribly also can’t be denied. Branding everyone Northern w@nkers and such.

Sadly wont be believing anything regarding Ziani or Larsson until they’re both through the door. Barton will have to sit in the middle against the mackems and hopefully be able to run the game. If Carroll isn’t fit i’ll be gutted.
How long is Shola out for?

      (Quote)

  36. A draw would be a godsend. Without Tiote we’ll probably get destroyed like. I just don’t want us to be humiliated.

      (Quote)

  37. Bruce must have been ecstatic when he saw Tiote get his marching orders. Can just imagine his big, ugly, cauliflower looking head grinning from ear to ear. ****!

      (Quote)

  38. Even the jock commentator that hates NUFC with a passion (Craig Burley Andy Gray’s lovechild) said that the Tiote challenge was never a red card and that they might aswell start playing in pipes and slippers. 🙂

      (Quote)

  39. Hoping for

    Harper
    Simpson/Staylor/Collo/Enrique
    Barton/Gosling/Nolan/Jonas
    Carroll (Shola if injured?)/Best
grind out the 0-0 draw 🙂

      (Quote)

  40. Come to think of it, without Enrique and Jonas we looked utter shyte. Come back Jonas we will never mock you again, all is forgiven. 🙂
