Who is our best central defender? Vote now.

Fabricio Coloccini
Colo - Best defender at the club?
Newcastle seem to be fairly well equppied in central defence these days, which is an odd statement to make considering we are a team that has become synonymous with shambolic defending over the years.

Could we do better than our current crop of defenders at this moment in time? Possibly, but overall I am fairly happy with what we have at the back for the moment.

It does make you wonder just who our best central defender is though doesn’t it? I mean none of them are perfect and they all have areas where they could improve, but who would you put at the top of the list at this current moment in time? First off, let’s look at the candidates.

Steven Taylor – The academy product has recently signed a new deal with Newcastle, which is good news to be fair. Taylor has a tendancy to drop a clanger at any point, and his acting skills are immense, but on his day he is a damn good defender.

In fairness, he has probably suffered from never having had anyone next to him to learn from. The likes of Jean-Alain Boumsong, Titus Bramble and David Rozenhal are hardly the solid defenders you would like to show a young lad the ropes.

He has suffered an injury plagued last ten months or so aswell, which has seen him only play a handful of games since the start of 2010. He has got his place back in the team now though, and he is doing ok, so hopefully his injury problems are behind him and he can continue to improve.

Fabricio Coloccini – The ยฃ10.3 million man has looked like a player reborn after his debut season in the Premier League. It wasn’t easy for him to settle into a new country and a turbulent team, and when the unthinkable relegation happened you would have expected that he would be off and for him to be consigned to history as yet another expensive foreign flop.

Just 18 months on and ‘Colo’ has become a bit of a cult hero with the St James’ Park faithful. His performances last season as we marched to promotion were excellent and he looks to have regained his confidence. He has carried that form into the Premier League this season, although he does have an alarming tendancy to mess around with the ball when he really should be clearing it. Easily one of the best footballing central defenders I have seen in a black and white shirt, although not as good as Philippe Albert mind.

Mike Williamson – Mike Williamson has only been at Newcastle for a year having arrived last January from Portsmouth. The former Torquay, Wycombe and Watford defender came with a pretty cheap price-tag and was a relatively unknown quantity.

Still, he settled in nicely and replaced Steven Taylor admirably whilst he was out injured in the second half of last season. Williamson is a pretty solid defender who has a knack of being in the right place at the right time, which is handy considering that he isn’t the fastest.

Sol Campbell – I’ve put Sol in more out of politeness to be fair, as I don’t think he will get many votes. Campbell has looked off the pace ever since he arrived at Newcastle and looks every inch a player that is approaching the end of his career.

I know he played well at Arsenal last season, but we aren’t Arsenal and we won’t have as much of the ball as they do. It’s easy to look good when you have a team like Arsenal in front of you and there isn’t much to do, but when things get a bit busier he looks a little lost these days.

I haven’t put Tamas Kadar in as he hasn’t really had much of a chance to prove his worth and is only a young’un who will hopefully be one for the future.

So go on then, get voting!

  1. colo for me as well .he what i view as a classy centre back..and intruth ,i think he could do a job in midfield or right back..infact a utility man if needed ….

  2. Colo by a long way, but who is our best defender, not just best CB?

    Jose or Colo?

    For me its easily Jose…….

  3. If you think about it, isn’t it remarkable that Colo is getting so many votes considering how he looked like he could have ended up? I think it speaks volumes of his character myself ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. It is a bit wild isn’t it? ๐Ÿ˜†

It’s just like mine to be fair. Full of volume and vitality ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. Completely off topic, but has anyone seen the latest comments from Platini regarding the 2022 world cup. Apparently it’s now going to be played in a number of countries in the Arabian gulf and not just Qatar. Can anybody else smell the corruption??? The *******s are just making this up as they go along!

  6. Aye got to be Colo for me as well like..still loses his head, but showing some real quality after a bad first season.

  7. None of our players, hopefully.

The Sun said the player is known for his clean cut image, which would rule a lot of our players out ๐Ÿ˜†

  8. Toonsy – i may have dreamt it but i’m sure that there was a picture of Collocini with short hair when he played for AC Milan

    – but i may have been half cut ๐Ÿ˜•

  9. Steven Taylor is class ๐Ÿ˜†

Btw anyone knows how many deflected goals have we conceded in all competitions this season?

    5 or 6?

  10. looks like Colo is the runaway winner.

now the real question is who’s the best pairing at CB? (Colo and Taylor for me)

  11. as far as I remembered
there’re goals against Liverpool , Chelsea , Arsenal , Man City , Spur ( just slightly ) and Stevenage.

And all of these game had Krul on goal
    What a poor lad !!! ๐Ÿ™„

  12. Hi Ice, unfortunately I did. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ I set my alarm clark to wake up and wished I hadn’t bothered. What a heap of ****. Hope the little darlings have had plenty of rest the last couple of days as per Pardwhos instructions as they will never be forgiven if commitment levels aren’t at their max this weekend. It’s gonna be a hard enough ask with Tiote missing and sweating on some of the others, so no passengers this game or they will be thrown off the bloody Tyne Bridge!

  13. agree Toonsy. If the manager/owner had listened to a lot of the fans calling for his blood the first season he would have been shipped out and look what we would have missed. Big learning point for us all, make sure we give new players plenty of time to settle in, and thats not half a dozen matches. It does say a lot for is character to ignore the criticism, focus on adjusting his game, learnng english, settling into new country, relegation and the absolute madhouse that was Newcastle at the time. Hats off to Colo!!

  14. The problem is that not many are listening. Leon Best is **** despite not ever really having a chance ๐Ÿ™„

To be fair, he may turn out ****e, but it is unfair to write him off without having a proper look in my opinion.

  15. Doesn’t sound like it Dave. We wait with bated breath as usual till the last knockings probably

  16. Steven Taylor.I from Brazil and i support for long time for Newcastle. We need another center defender.Maybe italian or germain. Not like caรงapa(argh!),but someone who show security and ugly face.Someone serious.Did see in these last macths how many silly goals we have taken? We need another man!
