Sunday news round-up.

News round-up.
Stop! Press!
The recent Wear-Tyne derby has kind of dominated proceedings so far this weekend, which is understandable, but now it has gone it gives us a chance to catch up on what else has been going on in the news.

With it being Sunday there has been a fair bit of news about today, although as I said above, a lot of it has been centred around the derby match, so I thought it was perhaps best to wrap it all up into handy article for you all to peruse at your leisure.

First off, there is some speculation from the Sunday Express suggesting that Joey Barton will be prepared to take a pay cut to sign a new contract, but only if said contract is of a sufficient length to enable Barton to see out his career at Newcastle.

Some more Joey Barton news is featured in The Telegraph as Joey Barton bemoans the fact that he is not getting a look-in for England. To be fair, he has a point. I can’t think of many English midfielders who are outperforming him at the minute. Can you?

Next up, Alan Pardew has revealed that Newcastle have already turned down some serious bids for their star players. The Sunday Sun is speculating that those players are Andy Carroll and Joey Barton, although Pardew stops short of naming the players concerned. He also claims that keeping hold of our better players shows the ambition of the club.

Perhaps more interestingly, there is a hint in that article that suggests Pardew could be bringing in a new face this week, although again it is only a weak hint. He does admit though that left-sided cover is a priority and cites the absence of Jose Enrique as an example.

There is very little on the transfer front to be honest, which is strange considering it is Sunday. I kind of look forward to reading which players we are linked with to be honest. I know most of it is made up rubbish, but it’s still fun, in a weird kind of way.

So there you go. Let us know your thoughts on all of this.

  1. Just noticed on Nufc.com that it’s John Carver’s birthday today. It says he’s currently unemployed since Speed left for Wales.

He’s a good coach and he’s a local guy, so it should be a no-brainer. What’s taking so long for AP to get an assistant in??

  2. Probably money. Pardew isn’t highly paid so try to get an assistant to accept less than that will be tough.

  3. Also, does anyone think we will sign Jay Bothroyd?

Personally, I don’t see why we’d bother. He might be better than Best but not by much. I can’t really see us spending any money in this window unfortunately and it’s great news that HBA has signed up permanently, so maybe we’re not as badly off creatively as we all think. I can’t wait to see him back and in the team on a regular basis.

Gosling should make a difference and maybe Ferguson will get a look in in the next few months, so the future’s not looking too bad – provided we do stay up this year. Also, Vuckic and Lua-Lua may yet come good and challenge for a first team spot in the next year or so.
A nippy, fox in the box-type striker in the near future is a must though – it has been since Bellamy left really as Owen never performed for us. Reliable cover for Jose and Simpson is vital too – I think Warnock would be a good signing .
We could happily lose Campbell, Lovo, Smith, Perch, Xisco and Guthrie to make room on the wage bill.

  4. I’d prefer not to get Nothroyd to be honest. I don’t see him as being any better than Leon Best.

In fact, at least Best has age on his side…..

  5. Jose Enrique made more forward runs than usual today, do you reckon Pardew has advised him to do so? A bit like how he said he did with Tiote?

What did you think of Best’s first and second half performances?

What did you think of our tactical performance today?

And finally, who was your man of the match? Although Nobby scored, I would probably say Colo.

  6. 1 – I think he has shown he knows how to get forward before, but I agree he is doing it more now. I think much of it is dependant on who he os playing against. Sunderland offered nothing down the right, which gave him freedom to go forward a bit more.

2 – Best was better in the second half in my opinion, although I don’t think he was terrible in the first half. He chased flick ons and got into good positions.

3 – Tactically good to be honest. We restricted them to long punts forward and they only equalised due to a huge slice of luck.

    4 – Colo. Definitely.

  8. Ice – I’m toying with this at the minute so things may change at short notice 😀

I’ve gone with this at the minute as I can have more widgets on each side, which means more info, hopefully anyway.

  9. BD-Sounds like it all went t!ts up at the end like. Harper essentially being assaulted, fans managing to get on the pitch, the police and stewards failing to keep Sunderland fans away from our lot, bottles, chairs, coins, everything being thrown.

Ok, cheers. I would probably agree with you on all points.
Colo today was as good as I have ever seen him. won almost every battle and nearly even scored. Superb performance.

I was watching Enrique today and he reminded me of Ben Arfa. The way he used quick feet and a sharp change of pace to beat players was immense. I hope he continues to do so.

Also, I thought it was funny how Mrs Doubtfire was claiming that today was the first time his team had relied solely on long punts for 90mins and how he was disappointed with it. Funny, because I distinctly remember their game plan being somewhat similar in our first meeting back in October 🙄

I have said it before and I will say it again. Sunderland have zero creativity in midfield and are quite a sub-standard side in truth.

  12. Ice – There ya go. Back to normal. I was just testing it for future use whilst it is a bit quiet 😉

ET – Sunderland are extremely average. I’ve not known another team have luck like they’ve had. Last minute winners, beach balls, deflections 🙄

  13. Ice I know mate how you feel about him and I understand 😉 I thought Jose was on fire too
El Toro can you imagine the partnership Jose and Benny could form down the left 😀

  14. DAVE aye jose was v.good, mind first 15min or so he was badly oot of position then settled down and was tops

  15. Aye Sunlun have got at least 10 points out of matches when they were totally outplayed, Including today.

They are the fluke team of the year there always is one. Brum last season, Wham in Zolas first season, Wigan and Reading in their first seasons up.

Im gutted about the ending but im still grinning like a **** becuase that fat fool made himself look like an idiot with his premature comments (You really think they would have learned from halloween 😈 )

  16. Guthrie’s stock certainly rose today. But was it he or Gosling that allowed the shot that got bounced in off Gyan at the end?

Still looks like open season on Barton out there. He was hammered all day and NUFC only got a few free kicks out of the maulings.

Xisco sitting next to Carroll on the back benches, when will they both get on the pitch again?

  17. Aye hes not the worst player were being linked with but I would give Best, Ranger and Loverman until the summer, If they dont improve replace them.

Now Lavezzi would be worth rushing through this month… 😉

  18. just to rub salt in that scum player has said it was hand ball put in with his fist  another webb **** ****

  19. Would really like to see a centre forward come in during the summer. We do have quite a bif of the ball during games and get in good positions. If we had another striker who was in the right place we’d be a much better team. Also someone who can create chances when we get in a good position. Jonas is starting to get on my tits!

  20. For me, Best just needs the ball played to him at chest height as he is useless at winning aerial battles. Once he gets the ball he generally finds a Toon player, turns and then runs towards goal. Believe it or not, he and Carroll are our only tow strikers that do that :S
