Harry’s up to his old tricks again.

Raggydolls, Raggydolls, made imperfectly.
I can just picture the scene. An old man sits in his office, surrounded by cigar smoke and dodgy brown envelopes. It’s dark and there is barely enough light to reflect the silhouette of what looks like the elephant man.

Welcome to the dark, dank and odius world of Harry Redknapp – a man who just won’t take no for an answer, a man who is still up for a charge of tax evasion, a man who doth protest too much when being branded a ‘wheeler-dealer’. Call him that and you’ll witness the real life imitation of the Churchill dog in action.

I note with interest that Tottenham have bid £25 million for Andy Carroll, and I also note that Newcastle have apparently knocked this approach back. I must say that at no point has there been any confirmation of any of this, but it seems to be making headlines on most of the ‘blogs and news outlets.

This pursuit of Carroll is becoming rather tiresome now. The player has said he doesn’t want to go, the manager has said he doesn’t want him to go, the club have said he is not for sale, yet the interest from Tottenham continues.

This is the tactic of Harry Redknapp. He tries to unsettle players, and I am surprised he has been allowed to get away with it for so long. You’ll probably note that Sky Sports spend an awful lot of time at the Tottenham training ground these days, and this is down to Redknapp, and in particular it is down to his rather chubby chops and loose tongue.

Commenting on other players that are employed by other clubs is not a problem for Redknapp. Phil Neville, Steven Pienaar and our very own Andy Carroll have all been subjected to this procedure over the last few weeks. The consensus being that it’s still a very taboo thing to do as it can be construed as trying to unsettle players.

It’s about time that something was done about it in my opinion. Announcing an interest is all well and good, but when you get told no, repeatedly, there should be a hint in there somewhere. Put it this way, if a bloke was in the pub and was trying his luck with a lady, kept getting told no but continued his pursuit, he would more than likley be branded a sex pest. Using that logic, Harry Redknapp is the sex pest of the Premier League.

Redknapp has a shady past, but I don’t really give a toss about that to be fair, as long as he stops trying to unsettle our players.

As I said earlier in the article, nothing has been confirmed officially about the bid with the only quotes seeming to come from sources and not from people that matter. Mind you, I have no doubt we will hear about it soon enough, when Redknapp next shows up in front of the cameras.

As for now, I can only repeat what the club have said all along: Carroll is NOT for sale.

  1. I’m sure Pards will say something to fan the flames again – just to keep himself and Carroll in the limelight!

  2. I don’t like Pardew talking to the press so much. Others have said it, but what’s the point in the talking down about Routledge? Maybe it’s true, but there’s no good saying it openly like that. It spurs him on to vengeance against us at some stage and it stirs negativity in the team.

  3. In the states, it is strictly prohibited to speak about possible moves with players who are contracted with other clubs. This goes for any sport. If a manager of a club talks about wanting to sign a player from another club, he and the club are fined for tampering. Maybe that’s needed in the uk. Although that wouldn’t stop guys like ‘arry getting his message across through his journo trolls.

  4. Btw I don’t believe villa’s comments that Ireland will stay. They have no leverage with Newcastle in the move so they’re just saying this now to try and get more money out the deal by saying give us what we want or we’ll keep him.
He had no place in the club the last 2 months and now he will? Bollox… We will call their bluff as we’re not screaming out for him and unless someone else comes in for him, villa will have to settle for what ever we offer or risk paying 70k a week for a player in the reserves.

  5. Toonsy, that’s shocking then because I’ve never heard of anyone getting reprimanded for it in the prem. But god forbid you field a team thats isn’t considered competitive…

  6. Spot on Toonsy, dodgy dirty Harry…

I would tell Churchill we’d accept as a MINIMUM:

    £30m + Krancjar + O’Hara/ Keane OR
    £30m + £5m after 30 goals +£5m after 10 England goals

      (Quote)

  7. I wouldn’t sell him full stop to be honest. I mean can we buy anyone with the same potential that Carroll has for the same amount of cash? I’m struggling to think anyone to be honest….

  8. as you said, getting tiresome now isn’t it.

A lot seem keen to criticise at any given moment for any given thing, but no one seems to have praised the club for their stance on Carroll. This is the second bid now and £23million for one player, who we got for nowt, is a lot of money which could go a long way.

Surely it’s a good indicator of the direction the people at the top want the club to go in by knocking back the offer(s)?

  9. ILM – Fair play to the club for it, but there is a point where we should accept for the beneift of the club.

      (Quote)

  10. Batty – Think about it though, £30 million quid strengthems the team a lot more. That is a first choice right winger, a £10 million striker, and £10 million left over.

As it happens though, I still say we are better off with Carroll. Players will want to some here to play in the same side as him if he carries on.

  11. I have a question for you all who’s opinions I respect so highly 😉
Given his success at spuds, do any of you wish Ol droopy eyes had taken the toon job when linked with it back when he was at Pompey?

      (Quote)

  12. Toonsy, not to mention we could probably generate that kind of dosh just in selling his shirt. We could have 30 mil to spend and still have Carroll.

      (Quote)

  13. JG – True. Good point.

As for Redknapp, I don’t think he would have had a impact at Newcastle to be honest. Look at the clubs he has managed where he hasn’t had money. He bought Pompey the Cup, and the troubles they are going through, and he has dosh at Spurs. Could he have done the same here with not as many resources?

      (Quote)

  14. Toonsy, I agree. And he may yet put spuds in the same kind of trouble. He’s got a good eye for talent but I question his tactical prowess. I doubt he could get the same out of our squad as hoots and now Pards have done. Both of whom are coaching managers.

  15. As i described him on runofplay.com “Can you defend Harry ‘twitcha’ Redknapp? I keep expecting Batman (when not turning in a shift for fathers for justice) to arrest him and turn him in to FA commissioner James Gordon….”

I don’t think we can buy another Andy Carroll but we could replace Enrique and Tiote. Spurs are worried about not qualifying for the Champions league – in which case they will lose VDV, Modric and Bale.

  16. Apparently the Suarez to Liverpool deal is all but done. With them in 7th ATM and in good form and with the potentially potent partnership of torres and Suarez, that could be our dreams of Europe gone.

      (Quote)

  17. I cant really think of a sensible sum that I would let Carroll go for, the money would never get given back for transfers and even so who could we get to replace him ❓ ❓
Carroll is the No1 person the team should be built around

  18. Just watched part of the Brum – Coventry game on TV…man am I glad we didn’t sign this bloke Bentley…. and if Larsson cannae get into that Brum team we don’t want him either to be honest….

  19. Rich 🙁

I’m just writing a blog for a Tottenham site at the minute. A guest appearance. Let’s see how they deal with facts 😈

  20. JerseyGeordie….the more I watch these supposed stars…i.e. “new Beckham’s” i.e. Bentley, the more I realise how many stars we have at the toon…Carroll, Barton, Tiote, Nolan, Enrique…what are these guys worth if Bentley is a 7 million pound man….ludicrous !

  21. Toonsy…giz the link to the Tottenham site so I can throw in my tuppenceha’penny mate ….

  22. I’m really glad we turned down the Carroll bid like. You’d think someone would catch on to what Redknapp is doing when Pardew has openly said he isn’t for sale 3 or 4 times, the club have said a couple of times he isn’t going anywhere and Carroll himself has said he doesn’t want to leave, but I suppose they’re a “top four” club now.

It isn’t technically, tapping up is it? They haven’t spoken to him, but their persistance doesn’t look innocent given the fact that it’s been said so many times now, that Andy just isn’t for sale.

As for incoming names, as the days go by the notion that we’re not actually getting anyone in becomes all the more realistic for me. I don’t think Ireland will turn up, haven’t thought he would from the start really.
We need a replacement for Routledge but at the end of the day, are we going to see another

“well we tried for Larsson, we tried for X and X but nothing could be sorted” window?
I’ve been impressed with Pardew thus far but it doesn’t necessarily mean Ashley will change his ways when it comes to parting with cash. Another right winger is essential, we basically don’t have one now Routledge has left.

  23. Munich – Google Triffic Tottenham. It’s not finished yet but I’ll let you know when it is, or of they put it up lol

  24. Munich aye, like bent going for 24 mil and spuds bidding 23 for *22 yr old andy?
Just wish we cod move xisco to one of those dafties for a good fee.

  25. ok Toonsy…..I had a skeg at that site a few hours ago, canny crack….they are obviously crying out for a big striker, as they all consider “two meter Pete” not up to the job…!…but opinions seem to be split on Carroll…

      (Quote)

  26. Lets face it, say the club accepted £30m for him, maybe £10m would be put back in, do you really see Mike Ashley saying, there you go, spend at will. He would think along the lines of £30m is all well and good, but we would have to still pay wages for any player that may come in, hence the £30m would go into the long term cost of any player(s) and got to say it, tried not to but some would go in his back pocket too!!

      (Quote)

  27. Ross, I get the opposite feeling. I feel like we will definitely have 2 new players in by Tuesday.
I also don’t know if I agree with cashley not dishing out the cash. He spent a lot of bad money on transfer when he first came in and I think he’s trying to be smarter about it. But he dished it out last Jan for that final promotion push and he had no problem handing out 4+ mil for a nicked Benny.

  28. Nufc.com are reporting that the Ireland deal is done. They’re usually pretty good. Guess we’ll see in the next few days.

  29. some one from aston villa club said ireland will go to newcastle, there just waiting for bradley johnson sign his loan deal before it’s confirmed

      (Quote)

  30. wonder if JB and Stephen Ireland were together at Citeh ?….hope they get along, would imagine so. Read an interview with him a few years back, he seems toi have a bit of edge about him.

      (Quote)

  31. Jersey-Will they be an improvement on what we already had though? I suppose currently, we just need numbers as back up, but it would be nice to see an improvement on what we had.
Felt canny bad for Routledge, even if Pardew thought he was terrible, there was nee need to blast him publicly like.

Where is this Ireland stuff coming from? as you said, .com are normally pretty reliable but you’d think if it was out on the net, other places would be reporting it.
I don’t even know if he’s that great a deal for us to be honest. Hopefully if he does arrive he wants to be here and he’ll try. If we’re taking the full hit for wages, a second signing (should we make one), will be on the cheap, lol.

      (Quote)

  32. Munich they were at citee together. Think Ireland was usually brought on for Barton actually.

      (Quote)

  33. It’s all quite tiresome regarding Carroll. The same transfer speculation **** will follow us throughout the close season too…

      (Quote)

  34. Ross, aye thats all I can see. Think it’s coming from that twitter lad by all accounts……….prob the same one who said he’d signed days ago 🙄

      (Quote)

  35. Ross with everything that has been said, it sounds like pards is looking for someone better than just a squad player. I think we can all agree that Wayne was basically just that. A squad player.
I’ll have no problem getting Ireland in if it a loan. Give him the rest of the year to prove that he’s good enough. A permanent deal I’d be against as I don’t like the risk of it and right now we need to be smart with our investments.

      (Quote)

  36. Aye it hardly inspires confidence, but they do have pretty good sources and they are usually pretty careful about airing speculation. Like I said, we’ll see.

      (Quote)

  37. Richie-Not like them to get involved with speculation like. They tend to do facts and nowt else.

Jersey-The annoying thing for me with Routledge is that I think he had ability. He was very fast and decent with the ball at his feet. Yes the championship seems, to be his level but I think he had a massive confidence issue playing in the Prem. Even if he can’t cross a ball brilliantly, why wasn’t anyone telling him to look to get to the byline and cut it back across the face of goal?

      (Quote)

  38. Ross at this level, if nobody has try to get the best out of him and work on his game, then we have bigger problems than Wayne. We don’t have eyes in training but I’m sure he was talked to and with 2 coach type managers like hoots and pards both having him on the bench, I think its safe to say what you see is what you get with him. Potential has to go out of the window with all the chances he’s had and with him now being 26.

      (Quote)

  39. Jersey-I agree with you RE potential being a lost argument..He’s had a host of PL clubs before who’ve all given up on him. Who knows, maybe I just feel bad for him because he seemed a canny lad and he tried hard, lol.

****** it, he’s gone now whether we wanted it or not, the main thing is getting in a replacement.

      (Quote)

  40. Ross Nowt with sticking up for a toon player mate 😉
I also agree that what pards said although true, might’ve been a bit harsh.
