Double intention? Newcastle v Arsenal match preview.

St James' Park.

St James' Park.
Newcastle take on Arsenal.
Newcastle entertain Arsenal on Saturday afternoon in what will be the first match of the post Andy Carroll era at St James’ Park.

The mood is gloomy around Tyneside at the minute, but a bumper crowd is still expected as ticket sales have remained impressive despite the less than inspiring transfer window.

It seems that I, along with many others, have been saying that the squad is down to the bare bones now through injury for some time now,but it is particularly pertinent in the striker department where we now only have Leon Best, Nile Ranger and Peter Lovenkrands as fit first-team striking options after the loss of Shola Ameobi to what is a suspected fractured cheek bone at Fulham on Wednesday night.

Shola will join Hatem Ben Arfa, Stephen Ireland, Steven Taylor, Ryan Taylor, Dan Gosling and Alan Smith on the sidelines whilst Fabricio Coloccini is a fitness doubt with a hamstring strain. It isn’t all bad news though as the home side will welcome back Cheik Tiote after his three game suspension.

Points on the board is a must, although against an Arsenal side that is one of only two unbeaten sides in the league in this calendar year you would have to say that we should probably prepare for no points tomorrow. Mind you, I said that back in November when the team went to The Emirates and we managed to grab a win so who knows? Hope may just spring eternal?

Assuming Colo is out, but with fingers crossed that he isn’t, I would go with a team that looks a little like this:

Newcastle: Steve Harper, Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Sol Campbell, Jose Enrique, Joey Barton, Cheik Tiote, Kevin Nolan, Jonas Gutierrez, Leon Best, Peter Lovenkrands.

Arsenal are flying high in the league at the moment and currently sit in second place in the table. It isn’t all sweetness and light for them though as they carry their own injury problems at present.

In-form Samir Nasri will miss the game with a hamstring injury as will Brazilian midfielder, Denilson. Alex Song has also been ruled out and will join Thomas Vermaelen, Emanuel Frimpong and Lukasz Fabianski on the sidelines. Sebastien Squillaci will return from his ban for the trip to St James’.

Arsenal beat Everton 2-1 in midweek to keep their title hopes alive. In that match they lined up with a team of:

Arsenal: Wojciech Szczesny, Bacary Sagna, Johan Djourou, Laurent Koscielny, Gael Clichy, Alex Song, Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas, Tomas Rosicky, Robin van Persie.

Newcastle have only beaten Arsenal twice in the last 16 Premier League meetings between the two sides, with one of those victories being the 1-0 win at The Emirates earlier on in the season.

Kevin Nolan is still searching for his 50th Premier League goal and if he can find time is schedule of praising other clubs he could get it tomorrow. Hopefully.

It doesn’t need me to tell you that this will be a tough match, but at least we won’t be wearing that horrible blue away kit again. We are at home so I expect us to have a go at them, but ultimately that could prove to be our downfall.

I’d love all three points, would be happy with a draw, but can only see a defeat unfortuately.

Howay the lads!

  1. Tomorrow not looking good thus far. I doubt we play two strikers though. Think we’ll probably play 5 in midfield. Either loven on the rw or Guthrie in the middle.

  2. I’d like to see:

    …………………….Harper
    Simpson Williamson Collocinni Jose Enrique
    ……………………..Tiote
    …………Barton ..Guthrie …. Jonas
    …………………….Nolan
    ………………………….Best

Where’s Vuckic in all of this? Is he injured? Lets see him get some action.

  3. Mike- been wondering about Vuckic myself. He hasnt played for the reserves in awhile either. I assume he is injured.

  4. yeah, it seemed at the start of the season he was being touted as the next big AM/F for us but was overshadowed by AC and Benny. Talk of Man U looking at him and all that. Now it seems he should be getting his shot and poof we’re looking at bringing in unwanted ‘boro rejects.

  5. The club must think well of him since he got a new 5 1/2 year deal right when Pardew come in. We could do worse up front at the moment…

  6. He’s injured guys, but he would be in ahead of mclovin for me.

I am fairly sure that nufc have a web based tv thing don’t we? With a subscription?

  7. They do have nufc tv but its not that great.

Before the wonders of internet piracy I payed for it. Being in Canada meant I could see little live action. You get audio of the games live then highlights and interviews after. Nothing real substantial production wise like you see on Chelsea or ManU tv. If they offered full match replays, classics and some live games (like Leafs TV here) I’d pay for it. I already pay $15/month for Setanta.

  8. Thought vuckic and airey both injured, think we’ll be up for game tomorrow but a point would be a decent result
Tough one but we can poss do it, will be interesting to see who’s CB tomorrow if collos out
To be honest I can only see nil points, but you never know

  9. How come arsenal are gonna show a live stream back to emirates?

  10. Why didn’t we demand David N’Gog on loan for the rest of the season. ❓ Now theres an idea. 💡 Im sure they would have agreed to it aswell. More backwards thinking. 🙁

  11. We might have djg but maybe the player didn’t want to come. Also they may not have wanted to lessen the fee by figuring in the value of a loaned player.

  12. Don’t know about you guys, but I feel as low as a snakes belly.
Think we will get easily turned over tomorrow.

So bloody annoyed that we failed again to invest in our squad during the window.

Granted Judas would’t have been available anyway but I am struggling to see where the creativity and goals will come from. 🙁

Anyway back to the Rugby and wine………….C’mon ENGLAND.

  15. Well, if the horrid weather plows on through game time, and a few things go right, ye got a chance. If I were MA not only would I welcome the rain, I’d water the pitch to make it a mud wrestling match. The slow hardly lose any speed in the mud, and NUFC have got some slow.

  16. Every time I see Walcott against us…I **** myself. You can just feel the self belief he has in tearing us apart. If we play Campbell and wenger has Walcott dropping a few yards off him so the other players have a glance and think “sol’s got the covered’ we are screwed. I reckon a bet on Walcott scoring first and last is for me tbh
