Honours even at Ewood Park.

Barton puts in another sound display against Blackburn.
Newcastle took a point away from Ewood Park this afternoon, but it could and should have been all three.

The away side bossed the match for long periods and created enough chances to win a handful of games. On another day, with better finishing and a bit of fortune, Nufc could have taken a large leap towards Premier League survival. As it stands though, a point isn’t all bad news and keeps us ticking along nicely in 10th place in the table.

Newcastle started brightly and created the opening chance of the game when Jose Enrique whipped a low ball across the face of goal. The ball evaded the grasp of Paul Robinson, but it also unfortunately evaded the path of any of our strikers.

Blackburn replied and could have taken the lead themselves through Roque Santa Cruz but he couldn’t direct his header goalwards and ended up hitting the post from six-yards out. From then on though it was Newcastle who dominated proceedings.

Jose Enrique was fantastic this afternoon and was our most creative force, although to be fair Joey Barton wasn’t far behind him. The Bull set up chances for Peter Lovenkrands, who deftly clipped a shot over Robinson in the Blackburn goal only to be denied by the crossbar, as well as crossing numerous dangerous balls into the box. Quite simply, Jose was the man of the match by far.

Leon Best was industrious as was Lovenkrands who chased and harassed Blackburn all afternoon. Kevin Nolan was quiet in front of goal but he kept things ticking over in the middle along with the superb Cheik Tiote doing his usual thing. Alas it was to no avail and both sides went in at half-time still tied at 0-0.

Newcastle continued to get into some good positions in the second half, and they continued to dominate possession at the same time. Fabricio Coloccini almost put the away side a goal up but was denied by a superb save from Paul Robinson after he flicked the ball over two defenders and launched a volley towards goal.

We played Blackburn off the park today, but our final ball was just off, or our strikers were just out of position which meant that we were unable to capitalise on our dominance. Chris Samba was shoved up front for Blackburn as they tried to sneak a winner in the closing stages, but the Newcastle defence held firm and I can honestly say that I can’t remember Steve Harper being tested all afternoon.

Next up is our game in hand against Birmingham which will be played on Tuesday evening. I’m sticking with my ‘pick up a point from an away game’ theory, which will put us on a sound footing as we head in to a double-header of home games.

As for today, it wasn’t to be, but at least the performance was there.

Howay the lads!

  1. Nope. i disagree.

    Aim for 3points ASAP. 👿

No more draws against teams that has higher chance of winning against them. Looking at the table,if the others teams are doing well just now,we wouldn’t be 10th right now.

  2. Not sure whether i’d agree on Loven being industrious…I dunno, he was definitely more noticable than he usually is but for me he could have placed his shot either side of robinson easily enough and probably would have scored, rather than trying the chip. Still, can’t blame him for the draw but would have wanted Ranger earlier, we can’t spend many more hours of play time waiting for loven to “hit form.” We’re really missing Shola atm.

  3. industrious is just a polite way of saying he worked hard, but as far as doing anything effective, he did nowt.

Quite a few positives to take out of today’s game however i’m going to have to be negative. We were over the moon to take 4 points off the Makems, aye? Well Blackburn have 4 points of us! The performance doesn’t seem like the success it was now does it?

Scum – 2 points, Spurs – 2 points, Blackburn today – 2 points, and we can go back to Blackpool, Stoke, Blackburn at home where we have dropped points against teams who at the end of the season, we’ll be around. It’s against these teams we need to get points, not getting the odd draw or win against the top 4.

We did everything today but score, and here lies our problem. F’k Carroll, simpleton commentators love to mention his name when ever possible, but at the end of the day, he hasn’t played since christmas, he wouldn’t have been playing today, and it seems he will be lucky to play again this season.

I’m afraid the lack of quality in the final third is our down fall, and you now how bad I reckon it is, if Kuqi was playing, I reckon he would have got on to one of those chances today!

I think we’ll stay up, but hey, the quicker were over 40 points the better, cause if we keep on drawing, we’re going to be pulled in to a dog fight before we know it, and the sad thing is, we’ve played some great stuff this season and don’t deserve to be fighting it out.

  4. Lovely finish Niko Kranjcar. 2 goals in 2 weeks now. Nee wonder old wax face ‘Arry decided he might keep him and give him a go. Should have been bidding the moment he said he could go and not give him a chance to change his mind.

  5. Ross

We could still get him in the summer as it doesn’t matter if he scores a hat-trick or more. As soon as Modric and VDV return he will be out he squad by default.

  6. Toro-He’s the one player i’d have really liked in Jan like. I’ve always rated him highly and think he’d be class for us, to be honest.

That was horrendous from Gomes. Even the embarrassed smirk and shake of the head from old ‘Arry proved how pathetic that play acting was!

  7. If I was a blackbum fan I’d be livid. They were home yet played for a draw for 90% of the game…

  8. Blackburn were poor today. They didn’t fancy playing football against us and instead tried to win the game through long balls into the box. It was good practise for us anyway with Birmingham up next. A truly diabolical side who are only getting points from set pieces up to a big lanky forward. The worst thing is that McCleish has spent decent money putting together that pathetic team.

  9. ILM

They are sill a complete joke of a club hat relies solely on long balls into the box, which is diabolical seeing as this money has been spent there.

  10. ILM – That pathetic team, that are two points behind us with a game in hand as you point out, have spent £36 million in the last eighteen or so months.

  11. jesus, those are some horrible figures!
The point I was getting at was that labelling them as pathetic almost feels like they are being touted as an easy win, which of course they aren’t. But I see what you’re getting at.

  12. Well Lads I still think 1pt wasn’t all bad I can remember a few fans Batty inc saying we wouldn’t get anything 😀

  15. Ice I have seen a lot worse displays than Lovens this year mate.
He was running about trying to give us something which in my book isnt bad aslong as a player gives his all I’ll support him, even if he dosn’t have the final cutting edge 😉

  16. Batty – Birmingham is a tough place to go mate. They don’t lose often for a reason. They are a team of plodders, but they are together and work as one.

  17. What was that suck up, er I mean Batty? 😆

Dave – 22 I think off the top of my head.

Carroll didn’t count anyway because of his age. Routledge did but he went and was replaced by Ireland. Xisco also went.

We had 23 before so 22 now I think?
