Will the 3pm home jinx continue?
The mystery of Newcastle United's home form is something that is confusing to say the least.
It's the home form that has been the achilles heel for us this season, which seems strange to say considering that we have beaten West Ham 5-0, smashed Aston Villa 6-0 and wiped the floor with the filth 5-1. All of those fixtures have one thing in common though, and that is the fact that none of them were played on a Saturday at 3pm.
It's been 30 months since we last won a Saturday 3pm kick-off at St James' Park in the Premier League. Of course that particular stat has been extended by our year long exile in The Championship, but it's still a pretty grim statistic all the same.
I look back at the games against Blackpool, Wigan, even Bolton just gone, and think that we should have done that bit better at home against these teams. All of them were played at 3pm on a Saturday.
Am I worried that this run will stay with us forever more? Of course I'm not as I know that it will end at some point. The law of averages dictates that it will end at some point. However, collectively we have to hope that this particular barren run comes to an end soon, hopefully as soon as this Saturday when Everton travel to St James' Park for, yep you've guessed it, another Saturday 3pm kick-off.
If this run doesn't end soon then we face the very real prospect of wasting what has been a decent season. I'm struggling to remember the last time we picked up so many points away from home in a season, which means that it would be a crying shame if we wasted the chance to build on the pretty good away form that has been racked up so far this season.
Newcastle have ten games left, five away and five at home, and of those five home games we have three that will take place on a Saturday at 3pm. Surely we have to win one of them?
If we don't, then we don't deserve to be in the top ten!
