Which keeper would you get rid of in the summer?

Three to become two? It’s looking likely that Newcastle will be without one of their two promising goalkeepers next season, if you go by what Alan Pardew says of course.

It’s a position in which we have been well stocked in over the years, but with Steve Harper getting on and one of either Tim Krul or Fraser Forster being moved on it could become another weak spot, especially if injury was to occur to whoever was our first choice at the time. We’d still have two great keepers of course, but I’d actually like to keep all three with one eye on the future.

It was perhaps inevitable that one would be moved on, and it’s inevitable that it will be either Krul or Forster. Put simply, both of them will want to be playing in a first team in the future, and if they are both getting in each others way it will prvent that from happening so it’s best that one does make way.

With no plans to recruit a keeper in the summer it seems likely that young Ole Soderberg will make the step up to be third choice next season, although Alan Pardew admits that he still hasn’t made up his mind who will be our number one for next season. Pardew told the Sunday Sun:

“In the summer I do not intend to bring a keeper in – our three goalkeepers will be on an even keel probably, with Harps just having the edge because of what he has done this season. Tim and Fraser have to come here in pre-season and be challenging.”

“One will have to go out and one needs to threaten Harps or take his position – that is what the club is about. We cannot keep them both at the club, we don’t want to.”

So now you have a bit of background on the situation, I’d like to ask which goalkeeper you would get rid of in the summer?

Let’s first take a look at Fraser Forster who has impressed during his season long loan at Celtic where the experience of playing in front of large crowds and in intense atmospheres such as the Old Firm derby will be the ideal preparation for him to become the long term number one at St James’ Park. His previous loan spell at Norwich will also have been key to his development and the fact that he is local lad as well is of course a nice little bonus.

Tim Krul has also had his chances this season though, mainly due to the injury to Steve Harper and has done alright in a few games. He has also had a few dodgy moments though and I feel much safer with Harper back between the sticks.

There are games which really stick in the mind when you mention Tim Krul though, such as his debut in Palermo back in 2006 and his cameo appearance in the draw against West Brom at the start of our season in The Championship. Both were fantastic performances that helped get us a result on the day.

Krul signed a new long term deal not so long back, so he is either tied down for the next few years or his fee is being fattened up by the length of his deal. Take your pick on that score.

So who to keep then? As I said, I’d like to keep both but realistically it isn’t going to happen, so if I had to keep one at the club it would be…………. Fraser Forster, but then that may be me being a little bit biased! I say it’s biased because both me and Forster are Hexham lads so it’s only natural that I’d stick with him.

It would be harsh to let Krul go, but I feel that we would get a better fee for him and wouldn’t lose out as we would have the ability of Forster. It’s a tough call, but that’s my opinion. Now I want yours!

  1. I’d put Krul out on loan for a season, looked quite good when he played, but feel much safer with Harper in goal. Forster now has 2 full seasons playing first team, I think he is closer to being a number 1 in our team, so maybe a season as 2nd choice to Harper and getting cup games will keep him happy. I just think he might be that bit closer to being ready for our first team propper

  2. Forster is going to be our number 1 when Harper retires I think. Also am sure he signed a 5 year deal not that long ago too but like you say shame to lose Krul.

  3. I think we might have trouble getting Forster to settle for a place as back up after so much 1st team games I think he will want to go. and tbh I cant really blame him as with the GK there is every chance that he could be on the bench for the whole season with no real prospect of getting playing 🙁

  4. Tricky one toonsy… It could be difficult bringing Foster back to the toon to sit on the bench. At the same time Harper aint getting any younger, 36 now, but could still feasibly play for 2 more seasons…plus his contract runs out in June 2012.. The gloves are off so to speak, 2 places up for grabs, with the third, probably Krul, going out on loan.

  5. I don’t think I was banned, I just know something I said offended a few people and I just kept off it to stop arguments. That or Ed’s blog, one of the two. I don’t think I was ever banned though.

On topic, I would ideally keep Harper as no. 1, loan Krul to Celtic next season (so he and Forster are kept equal) and let Forster challenge/fill in for injury like Krul this year. That’s ideal though.

I can see us trying to arrange a deal with Forster going to Celtic and us getting a player in exchange or maybe Forster plus money for Izaguirre or something.

To be honest, with our plentiful selection of keepers, we might do well boosting the rest of the squad at their expense. Forster has openly said he wants to be first choice from now on and he will get that at Celtic but not here.

  7. I would go on and let rip again but besides the fact I can’t remember my login details (these blogs are horrid for having to use random passwords, etc), there are only about 4 blogs a week and 17 comments per blog nowadays so I wouldn’t have anyone to rant at.

I did, however, see a picture of Graham Carr on there today. He looks like Alan Turner from Emmerdale.

  9. Krul to Rangers? I wouldn’t be happy with that deal, lol.

You don’t? Hmm, been that long since I posted there, I can’t even remember. I might wait until I see someone say something I don’t agree with and then let rip.

  10. I haven’t been on the blog for hours, not seen many posts. I’ll check it out.

I just heard on SSN that 6th place in the league is no longer a Euro spot as either Stoke or Bolton will take that spot from the FA Cup final.

We are now officially out of the Euro chase. Maybe a blog for tomorrow toonsy?

  11. FJ I know it’s highly unlikely we could get to thinking about a Euro postion now this season, but it is still there if Bolton get 6th spot and FA Cup final. They would be in the UEFA via the cup and leave 7th spot to be another euro place, if I’m right in what I’m thinking. Course, that would only work if we finished 7th and Bolton got 6th.

  12. Unless of course Birmingham got relegated and Bolton finished 6th. But thats just never going to happen

  13. I am not sure, I just heard them say on Sky quite confidently that 6th place is not going to be a European spot in any way this season. I am not sure what happens if Bolton get sixth AND the FA Cup spot or if Liverpool win Europa League and qualify to defend it.

I think there may still be a chance for 6th to have a spot, but I am not sure on how the qualification stuff happens now so I am just going off Sky.

I think it’s unlikely Bolton will get sixth or Liverpool will win the Europa anyway, so I think we need to just confirm safety and get as high as possible now. Forget Europe entirely.

  14. Wonder if him and Taylor will shake hands when we play them, I think they will but I would love Taylor to snap him then for it all to kick off.

  15. Colo to give him a nice elbow like he did to Elmander 😆

Nolan would probably stick up for Carroll!

  16. No, I didn’t watch the rugby. Last time I watched Rugby was about 10 years ago, when our national team was still rubbish but we at least managed to beat the likes of Italy in the Six Nations. We had a decent team. We now have a woeful team.

  17. On a non-sporting connection to get away from my nation’s woeful sporting legacy – I also claim Celtic as much as Scottish as I have no English family at all. On this note, I will claim the lovely Clare Maguire as one of my own mob and just link to her lovely self as some eye candy for all us guys who have no better thing to do than post on a football blog at 11pm on a Sunday:

The thing that really gets to me is some of the **** he has said to me on the blog, I would be 99% sure he wouldn’t say to my face but I can honestly say that I have never said owt to him on the blog that I wouldn’t say to his face, infact I could think of more things to say to his face that I wouldl’d say on the blog.

  21. I never entertained him Dave as he doesn’t listen to anyones point of view if it doesn’t fit in with his own. Even if he does agree, he pretends he doesn’t to make himself look like some sort of grand master of knowledge. Can’t be arsed with the lot who kiss his **** constantly as well

  22. I also noticed that even though he has been prompted at least 100 times, he still hasn’t muttered an apology.

  23. Im not gonna vote actually, I like both and Im not paid £???, ??? a year to decide. (Or in the case of fat #duck Allardyce or #slick Keegan £?,???,??? a year to decide) Instead I will contribute what I like about each.

Tim Krul — Good shot stopper as recognised against Arsenal by Lawro on MOTD. Seems to have good pedigree and lots of potential. Although his kicking is a bit dodgy and I traditionally don’t like left-footed keepers.

Fraser Forster — He has done well and became the mainstay at a League 1 chasing (and winning) club and a SPL chasing club. Ok not champs league but pretty respectable. He is a GIANT, I mean really big, fills the goal, long arms. He is from Hexham (toonsy can relate) . Im actually leaning towards keeping him over Krul don’t know why because I like Krul aswell. (just not his kicking)

    #duck means……use your imagination.

  24. So more people want Forster. ❗

I dunno, I kind of agree, I think Krul will be good but I think Forster has something about him and is too good to let go. i.e he could be playing at Manure or something in 10 years and we will have let another local star go on to pastures new.

  25. Whatever happenes I think they should go their seprate ways and play first team footy at the biggest clubs they can. Looking at Harper and how he sat on the bench for years and years, theres a strong possiblity he would have played for england had he left to be 1st choice at a london club years ago. Some people say ‘ooh well, he was loyal to newcastle so he was’. Well to those people I say WAKE UP!! 🙂 where does loyalty get you… nowhere, get some attitude. 😉

  26. If I had to choose I’d say sell Krul (I tried to vote but the web site kept saying I had to pick a valid choice, even though I’d clicked on Krul !!? 😕 ) Harper is still 1st choice in my opinion. He has been stellar for us making many fine saves.

      (Quote)

  27. Why not look at signing a thirty odd year old keeper on a free and loaning the pair of them to champ or ***** prem sides next season (with a 24 hr call back)

Then look at things after the season to see if Harpers still got it.

      (Quote)

  28. I rekon that forster is going to be better than krul, he already has more experience off playing a full season in the SPL and leage 1, he is huge and would be a great goalkeeper to have in the box again physical teams like stoke 😆

      (Quote)

  29. If ever comes to the point of selling one of them,we can actually sell krul to arsenal.they need it. 😎

Or right now emergency loan them krul. 😆

Or we can loan them both out next season and let soderberg on bench. 😉

      (Quote)

  30. I like Forster. I am all for championing local lads as well. I think Tim has done a good job but still see him as very much a ‘developing’ player where I reckon Forster has bucketloads more confidence from two full seasons. I would say, loan of Krul and ket Fraser get some time to impress at the club.

      (Quote)

  31. Yeah I think we should recall Forster and loan out Krul. Then Krul will be able to develop more and we can have a proper look at Forster. What Moreno said.
