Are NUFC fans really deluded?

Now this Boro lot really are deluded!
It’s become a throw-away comment which has become synonymous with Newcastle fans over the years.

The word ‘deluded’ tends to be thrown at us with alarming frequency, but are we really as bad as what other fans say?

Personally speaking, it annoys the hell out of me when people make these kind of remarks. When they use the word deluded they really show up just how thick and ignorant they are. Still, if they want to be simple and get suckered in by using a lazy insult then fair enough. I, and many others, know different.

The perception is that us Newcastle fans are unhappy when we aren’t challenging for trophies or when we aren’t tussling at the top of the league. We are an impatient lot apparently, although quite how anyone can be impatient after 40-plus years of waiting for a trophy is beyond me. We moan about the managers and harass them out of their job and disapprove of **** performances of our players.

To be fair, with that lot I could be describing Liverpool fans, or any fan to be fair.

We all want the club to be doing the best that it possibly can. We all want it to be challenging for honours at the top of that game, but all too often we have been let down aside from about 20 years of success dotted sporadically throughout our 129 year history. There is no ‘divine right’ (another myth that us NUFC fans have thrown at us) for us to be challenging for trophies.

Deluded? So fans at other clubs have no ambition then? Do fans of other clubs not dream about winning a trophy? Of course they do. Does that make those fans deluded also?

I just wanted to get this off my chest as it’s one of the main things that grinds my gears when I hear opposition fans saying it. Granted, we haven’t had to deal with morons from other clubs on here yet, but as the site gets more noticed, gets busier and gets on places such as Newsnow it will no doubt start to happen.

The bottom line is that us Newcastle fans are the salt of the earth 😉 and that the rest of them are just bitter about our great support. That’s how I view it anyway.

Are we deluded?

No. We are no different to fans at any club up and down the country and at any level of the league pyramid. They all want their respective team to be at the top and they all dream of silverware. They all get angry when their team has a bad result and they all get angry when a manager goes on a bad run. Now if you really want to see deluded, just take a look at Sunderland.

The next level indeed!

  1. I dunno, saying its a disgrace because we “should be beating the likes of Stoke” etc. isn’t the best sign of reality based thinking.

There is still a fair dose of arrogance – not ambition in the fan base, despite the fact only about 3% of the fan base was alive when the club last achieved anything of note.

I tend to roll my eyes whenever I read comments about “we should be beating them” and “we should be above them in the table” when we really are no great shakes ourselves.

I think that’s what most people mean when they say “realistic”. Then again, I am a worst case scenario kind of guy, never been one to see any point in living nevermind fake optimism so I’ve no idea what the hell I posted this for.

  2. It’s the English way, never mind just Newcastle fans being deluded! I think the vast vast majority of fans like to have a whinge if the team they follow isn’t delivering the goods!

Aren’t you entitled to have a moan when you spend your hard earned cash and have a bunch of lads who play like they don’t care?

I have grown up without us winning anything, so that’s not really something I get massively down about, I care more about the effort that’s put in. Obviously, a by-product of giving 100% and putting the effort in is that you end up challenging for trophies and I could point to the Stevenage game to argue my case on that so my ‘delusion’ is more anger that we don’t give our all on the pitch from time to time (or most of the time as is the case recently)

Look at the national team for example. The players are actually scared to play some times due to fan expectation. It’s evident in their performance.
Steve Gerrard made a comment before and after the England vs Andorra game that he was nervous on the ball for fear of being boo’d. This is a guy who has played in champs league finals with a career spanning over a decade who can’t deal with the fan expectation. It’s the reason we will never win anything as a nation.

It’s delusion to think the national team can challenge for a major trophy every tournament, a delusion which is wholeheartedly taken up by the majority of the nation, every 2 years.

  3. Hahah, remember that flag, Boro away was a good day out. Poor smoggies 😆

Dunno why we get branded deluded all the time, part of me thinks its just other fans being jelous that we have one of the best supports around and just want us to do well – if we don’t like whats going on we let our feelings known.

  4. If criticizing the decisions made by twats of Souness and Dalglish destroying the finest sides im ever likely to see at SJP is deluded then count me in.

souness constantly blaming the fans for him getting the bullet mades my **** boil, A man who takes on a club that had finished 4th, 3rd and 5th in the previous seasons, spends £50m and cannot get them higher than 14th deserves the sack IMO deluded supporters or not.

Why do people with a shred of integrity like Strachan/Hodgson did when leaving their last clubs admit it never worked out, Even someone as cocky as Clough admitted his mistakes at Leeds and his last season at Forest yet we have complete bellends like Allardyce/Gullit/Souness slagging the fans unrealistic expectations for not allowing them to make an even bigger mess… 🙄

  5. I would like to say something to protect the great reputation of newcastle fans. 😆 😈

I think there is 1 reason why newcastle fans are breanded deluded all the time.

The team for the past 5-10years has no consistent performance, resulting in a weird situation where at a point of time the team seems to be able to beat anyone, then fall badly in the end. Quote the 12points leading season.

Which makes us having the thoughts,we can beat certain team easily LAST TIME,why not now?

This season is quite similar, there was a point where if we get 3points we can move to 7th! But as usual the team fails as always.

The fans are not deluded,is simply the team keep giving us false hopes. 😥

  6. FJ…but thats at every club, Wigan,West Ham,Wolves fans etc will all be saying we should be beating this team that team, thats football, it doesn’t happen anymore or less here than it does at other clubs. I bet Wigan had us and Blackpool chalked down as 6 points for example of the newly promoted clubs.

  7. I Wouldn’t say were deluded but if we win people jump on the bandwagon…

… and it goes the other way if we lose a game but I guess that’s just how every fan is at every club 😉

  8. richietoon – message 6,

You are right on the whole – but we are one of the newly promoted clubs and yet Stoke, a team Man Utd and Arsenal struggle to beat, getting the double over us is a disgrace to a lot of people. Why?

We’re a newly promoted club with a rather **** squad but a decent first 11. We shouldn’t be beating anyone outside Blackpool and West Brom really as we’re inferior to the others, and we haven’t beat Blackpool or West Brom this season either.

There is football banter and there is realism I think. Then again, I am a negative pleb as I established before.

      (Quote)

  9. FJ…..no football club has realists as fans, thats why they’re “fanatics”…..blinded by loyalty, hope and dreams more than reality.
There’s never been a game where I’ve thought we have no chance of getting anything from it nor will there ever be one, there’s always a chance however slim, thats the beauty of football 😉

      (Quote)

  10. …….and if we’re inferior to the others shouldn’t we be bottom of the league right now?

      (Quote)

  11. Just to answer the article’s question…..Yes I am and that’s the way I like it, the reality is I’ll probably never see us win a trophy but I’ll keep deluding myself that we might if that’s ok with everyone here?….Ta very much 😀

      (Quote)

  12. We’re two flukes against Arsenal and Liverpool results from the bottom off the table 😉

  13. “…….and if we’re inferior to the others shouldn’t we be bottom of the league right now?”

Spot on, The reason we arent inferior is fat micks wedge allowed us to keep a premier league team in the championship.

Any manager of the bottom 7 or 8 sides would kill for Tiote, Coloccini, Enrique, Barton, Saylor, Gutierrez, Benny, Nolan and for half a season Carroll 👿

      (Quote)

  14. nowt flukey about the Liverpool result and there’s been more games where we’ve deserved something and got nowt than vice versa 😉

      (Quote)

  15. Wolves would be miles adrift at the bottom without their results against manure/chelsea/liverpool/Man City/Spurs if you count great results against top sides as flukes…

  16. Sorry if this is a bit off topic but does anyone know if we’ve still got a mathematical chance of winning the league this season?

  17. We do possess some absolutely mental fans-you need only look at some of the comments on Ed’s blog to see that, where people a few months back had chartered future win lists, including “easy” wins over stoke and everton which would see us back in europe next season. But I don’t really see how that’s different to other clubs, Liverpool fans have a fit when they’re not challenging in the champions league year on year. I can only assume we tend to get these allegations thrown at us because we have a larger fan base than most and yet always tend to underperform, meaning when some of our more vocal and less sensible fans drum up some nonesense they get noticed and ridiculed more often than they would by others.

Anyway like Moreno said, I reckon its more of an English thing , we do it all the time, every year, in every sport. Overexpectation. But then at the same time, most people would agree that anyone thinking we were gonna win the world cup in Safrica was mad.

  25. All fans are deluded to some degree, villa fans are currently calling for houlliers head, 3 games ago moyes was a target for everton fans, Liverpool fans got hodgson the sack, Blackburn fans hated BSA and now hate both owners and new manager, ancellotti has been a target, wenger can take **** no further, spurs fans hated gross and others the list goes on and on – being a fan is about the club being your passion – if fans didn’t give a toss it would be pointless clubs entering cups full stop – any team left in the 5th round will have fans who believe they could win it

  26. I don’t know if other fans are deluded. I’m starting to get less confidence in Pardew after the last game’s team selection where he personally got it very wrong I think; it was like back to the days of Hughton or Roeder tactics. I think he’s had his ‘honeymoon’ period by now and he should be well up to spped regarding Campbell being past it and not playing a negative formation with newcastle. I don’t have much confidence in the gruesome twosome either in terms of investing in the club for next season. For those reasons I don’t think I’m deluded, I more live in hope than expect anything concrete when it comes to NUFC.

  30. I think we are deluded actually, we say ‘most newcastle fans would be happy to survive this season’. Then it went from that to ‘lets go for europe’. Then deep down I think most of us harbour this idea that within a few years we could have a new massiah and be back in the champions league. Deluded? All football fans are including those who call us. (Liverpool fans especially)

  31. All the Sunderland fans go on about how good of a season their having and how much money they’ve spent, also how there on a ‘different level’ to us…

DJG I think its just natural that after a few good results you start to look ahead then after a few bad ones you start to look down but then what would life be like without dreams ??
