Has Barton blown his chance?

Joey's chance blown?
Controversial midfielder Joey Barton has a habit of hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons, and has attracted his fair share of criticism over the years.

However, that has been changing, especially this season, as Barton has turned himself around from being a complete waste of space as a player for NUFC and has become a key player in what has been a pretty good season for us so far. The facts are that we haven’t won without him, so that kind of highlights his importance to the team.

However, outside of Newcastle and it’s fanbase it’s been a much quieter affair. It seems that if Barton is behaving then he may aswell not exist. The lack of any real acknowledgement of his form this season is telling, as is the utter disregard of the tactics that are sometimes employed against him (Wolves, Stoke). The silence is most definitely deafening when it comes to praising Joey.

That silence was broken in midweek, but it was Barton himself who broke it as he sounded off to a French magazine about his past and how he is currently the best English midfielder on current form. It’s hard to argue with it really and his tirade against England players such as Gareth Barry was met with agreement from a fair proportion of our fanbase. ‘Joey is just telling it like it is’ were some of the remarks that I recall, which is fair enough I guess.

The problem with using the kind of words that Barton used in midweek is that you, perhaps unintentionally, grab the media limelight again. I did wonder during the week, after his remarks, whether or not they were a good thing or a bad thing and whether or not Joey was just setting himself up for another fall in front of the eyes of the frothing masses who have disregarded all of Joey Barton’s good work so far this season.

That transpired yesterday as Barton put in his worst performance in a while. Now to you, me, anyone who supports Newcastle this is understandable. It’s a blip, a small smudge on what has been a great season for him. But to others it was a chance for Barton to back up his big words with a big performance.

When you are Joey Barton you don’t often get the chance to grab the attention for footballing reasons. In a fudged way, Barton had the attention for his football yesterday and he had a chance to show people outside of NUFC what he could offer. He failed, and Joey Barton will only get one chance with some.

Now I know, and you know, that Barton will bounce back from this as every player has a poor game, but not everyone is willing to give him the time which is a shame. The words of Barton may well come back to haunt him. Can you imagine the Villa fans singing ‘You’re just a s**t Gareth Barry’ if Barton hadn’t given them the ammunition to do so? I can’t…

It’s a shame for Barton really as I feel that this was his chance, and I’m unsure whether or he’ll get another. Through black and white eyes he will get more chances, of course, but it’s not our opinion that he needs to change to be fair.

Chin up Joey.

  2. I completely agree with Barton that he deserves another chance on the National team, but to go out in the press and say he’s better than those who’s playing there is not so wise methink,as he’s just making himself available for more stick. It’s happening already!I don’t know about England, but in Norway where I come from you are not supposed to say you are better than others even though you are! It’s an unwritten rule.

  3. On the upside after spouting off like he did the chances of him moving in the summer will be slimmer now!!!!
Not really selling himself is he!

  4. Yeah, I don’t think the camera’s caught it but the ref had to step in and Reo-Coker looked mightily upset about something JB had done.

  5. Ha well who wonders if the FA WILL be able to act on that this time? Funny how little things like that change from team to team, or player to player

  6. Once again, I think Lovenkrands has come under some unfair scrutiny.

He made some really smart runs yesterday, especially in the first half, but no one was able to get the ball to him. Ranger was particularly slack at finding him.

I have to say that I’d never bought in to the whole Enrique looking like his mind is elsewhere thing… until yesterday! His body behaviour, unfortunately, does imply that he’s off.

Agree with Johno, btw. Haven’t heard such biased commentary in a long time.

  7. Just think we had such a weak side out, Ranger won’t score in a million years, Enrique is either great or shocking never inbetween. Barton had a stinking game and maybe serves him right for opening his mouth. Shame because I think Villa were there for the taking and if we had a stronger team out I think we would have got something.

  8. blip. Aye our midfield didnt provide any service for our strikers and when Ranger had it he never tryed to play in Lovenkrands. I still think Lovenkrands is **** though.

  9. This is what happens though when you try and rely on reserve team strikers. We were like some toothless old granny with no bite. The reason Bent costs the dough is because he sticks it in the net every game. He doesn’t do anything else he is just there at the right time to stick it in the net. We will always struggle unless we sign a striker like that in the summer IMO.

  10. He was terrible yesterday but his ball to Lovenkrands at the end was first class and really should have been a goal.

It was typical that he said he was this and that then the Villa game was on Sky and he was shocking. The spotlight was on Joey yesterday with him being captain as well.

Let’s hope he takes out all his fustration and plays class against the mancs 🙂

  11. Ranger looked light weight yesterday.
He’s not taking his opportunities to shine in the absence of Best and Shola.
I fear he just hasn’t got it !

  12. Bobby Shinton. I was really hoping that he would come through this season but I don’t think he’s got what it takes in front of goal.

  13. Think Ranger just couldnt compete physically with Dunne or Collins , they are fairly big lads

      (Quote)

  14. To be honest it could have easily been 2 or 3 nil. The Bent goal ruled offside, seen them given and then when he missed that one with his head.

  15. @Shearer
Are you the real Alan Shearer and are you after Pardews job?

      (Quote)

  16. I agree Bobby, so many have been calling for him to be given a start, but when that oportunity arrived, he failed to step up. I dont think he ever will, which begs the question HOW on earth he got given a 5 year contract? I mean WTF. Its decisions like this that make us a laughing stock. I’d love to know who came up with that one.
Also, as ranger was playing so poorly, why was kuqui not brought on sooner. 83 fugging mins ffs. Pardew is a clown 😯
And why not bring on ferguson? Whats the lad gotta do to get some game time?
I wish Joey B would just shut his beek and let his football do the talking. Talk about setting yourself up for a fall 😈 and yet again reflects badly on NUFC.

  17. Ranger must be sent out on loan next season to aid his development, at present he is not good enough.

  18. What I don’t understand is why people like Phil Thompson and Barton tell foreign newspapaers / radio shows / tv shows such big news and not the UK? It will obviously get back to the press over here so whats the point in Thompson saying Jose is a done deal or Barton about Barry and England to Norwegian or French press Barton might as well shoot himself in the foot here. Unless it is all a bit lost in translation…….

  19. AndrewNUFC I’m sure that ball was whipped in by Guthrie, may be wrong. Anyway Joey is a great talent and shouldn’t be judged on his past, other England players have done the same as him. Gerrard (former captian) assault in a night club, what is the diffrence. He should have been picked a long time ago, it is a disgrace 👿

  21. me and my dad think 7 of the players playing yesterday are simply not gud enuf 2 wear the toon shirt , harper , collo , barton and gutierez were the only 4 i see in our future team . once we get tiote , nolan , ben arfa and gosling back we desp need 2 mint strikers and 2 mint defenders , my team next season

    1 harper
2 new defender as enriques away
    3 new defender
    4 new defender
    5 collo
    6 tiote
    7 barton
    8 nolan
    9 gosling
    10 ben arfa
    11 new striker

and gutierez , new striker , willo , ireland , krull . simpson on the bench

  22. I would have Ireland in a front 3 with Benny on the other side and Gervinho up front. Or maybe Gervinho out wide with someone like Wickham through the middle.

Picking back up on the Barton thing, He should just shut his mouth. The fact that Gerrard has been involved in the nightclub thing etc is a pojt, but what about Rooney’s latest thing. He swore down the camera and he is being defended by all the pundits and alot of media because ‘it was passion and a celebration’. Wrong it was premeditated and he knew what he was doing. If it was Joey then he wouldve been hung. Again. I am not saying Joey is an angel, because he isnt. But frankly he has been playing really well and if we are looking at the national team do we want the best players or angels? A Cole wouldnt get in if we look at what he has done, Terry the re-instated skipper wouldnt get in, Ferdinand wouldnt get in with his drugs test, Rooney wouldnt get in for all sorts of reasons, we could go on and on. The fact is that Joey is not liked, he spouts off too much and he just has a bad rep from his past. He wont ever get back into the national team and so we should just be thankful he will play for us and us alone. That is unless fat Spam gets a job in the summer and will probably take him and smudger

  23. bad day for Barton, bad day for all the lads. I’m sure if he scored a hattrick against Man Utd people would take notice, heres your chance Joey 😉

  24. Barton never did and never will have another chance of playing for England again, so what ever he says or does not say in the press, however well or badly he plays, the chances of him pulling on an England shirt will always remain the same…..nae fecking chance, the sooner he and everyone else realises that the better 😉

Noticed there isn’t much media coverage on Phil Thompson’s claims, just a few random blog articles.
If we are as good in business as we are made out to be, surely you would wait until the transfer window opens, starting a bidding war and driving the price up. Would be daft to agree things now with a rival club.

  33. In regards to Jose leaving ( or not leaving ) or any other player leaving the club is re building so players are going to move on , and Im sure there will be players moving on we wouldnt want to move on but we just have to hope that the club replace them with quality
