Stalemate at St James’! Newcastle 0-0 Manchester United.

Rooney fires over.
Newcastle battled to a brave point against title-chasing Manchester United this evening in a match that had much more entertainment within it than the scoreline suggested.

Alan Pardew made three changes to the side that lost at Aston Villa last weekend as fit again Shola Ameobi, Cheik Tiote and Tim Krul, deputising for the injured Steve Harper, were all called upon, and to their credit they all did a job against a team that has an awesome record against us.

The home side started brightly, but they could have been a goal behind before they got into their stride had Tim Krul not spread himself well to prevent Javier Hernandez tapping in a Wayne Rooney square ball. From then on though, the home side took control of proceedings.

Alan Pardew clearly had his players up for it and they got into Manchester United and forced errors. They had chances through Jonas Gutierrez, Shola Ameobi and Joey Barton and registered five attempts at goal and numerous corners in the blink of an eye. St James’ Park approved of this and the noise volumes cranked up a few levels in response.

You have to score when you’re on top though, and Newcastle nearly paid for their profligacy when Wayne Rooney clipped the ball over Mike Williamson to put himself through on goal. I fully expected the fat chav to get his annual goal against us, but to my surprise he spooned the ball at Tim Krul who deflected the **** high over the Gallowgate net.

After a frantic start the game started to settle down and Manchester United started to get into it a bit more. They had the bulk of the possession, and rather ominously it was all in and around the edge of our penalty area.

Newcastle still had their chances however through a couple of Joey Barton set-pieces and through a mix-up in the away sides defence which took Peter Lovenkrands by surprise, but that was about it it for the first-half and there is a strong case to suggest that Newcastle were the better the side and should have been in front.

Alex Ferguson clearly had the hairdryer out at half-time as his side started the second-half with intent and forced a series of corners. Fortunately nothing came of them but it was Man Utd that were clearly on top and took control of the game.

Newcastle can possibly feel aggrieved that they weren’t awarded a penalty when Anderson tripped Peter Lovenkrands in the box. Replays showed that there was contact although I personally feel that a penalty would have been harsh as I think Lovenkrands had lost control of the ball. Still, it was a talking point as referee, Lee Probert waved away the claims.

To be honest, both sides struggled to create much in the second-half. There was no doubt that Manchester United had the better of the chances, but fortunately those chances just didn’t sit right for them whether that be due to good fortune or good defending by Newcastle in equal measure.

Stephen Ireland made his long-awaited debut as he replaced Lovenkrands, and he nearly made an instant impact when he latched onto a Shola flick-on and hit an instant shot that went just wide of Edwin van der Sar’s goal. That was to be Shola’s last act as he was withdrawn for Nile Ranger.

St James’ Park had quietened down a bit, but they were woken back up again when Michael Owen was introduced as the away side went all out for the win. Ironically the introduction of a man who couldn’t motivate Newcastle when he was here somehow managed to do just that as the home side woke up for the final ten minutes and started to threaten again.

Ryan Giggs flashed a shot just wide after finding the ball at his feet in the area, and there was a scare in injury time when Javier Hernandez went down under a Danny Simpson challenge, which resulted in the Mexican receiving a booking for simulation. All I’ll say is that if Lovenkrands wasn’t awarded a penalty then neither was this one.

That was it for the action as Lee Probert blew the whistle. A fantastic point for Newcastle which moves them up to ninth and sees us hit the magic 40 point barrier.

  1. Just got back in, thats us safe, what a point!

Mike and Colo were rocks, some said Mike would get turned etc and he played quality. Krul made some class saves too.

My heart dropped at the end I thought the ref pointed at the spot anyway, next goal finish above the mackems!

  2. Great game, class atmosphere. Cant really fault anyone bar Shola and Loven as usual. One step closer to saftey!

Knew I would get booed as that’s what a lot of fans do but if they knew the facts then they may have a different opinion.

  4. a couple of weeks ago people were saying 42 would be enough to ensure safety…..now with less games and most teams havn’t gained ground on us, they still say we need 42, doesn’t make sense.
We were safe on 39 points 17 days ago imo and are even safer now 😉 😀

  5. Facts like he was injured more often than not and other facts like his goals cost us 1.3million a piece? Facts like that, Mikey?

    Tosspot

  6. Michael Owen has seriously p1ssed me off saying “if they knew that facts it would be different”. The fact is he was a catalyst of the downfall of the club and he cashed in big time from it.

He didn’t do his job properly and in the real world if that happens people lose their job and their life is in ruins. But no, he knows some club will be their to give him a nice little nest egg to take into retirement.

    Class 1 B3llend

  7. I know someone mentioned it on the previous thread, but the fan holding out a few quid when Owen came on was priceless. Even my Manc friend was complaining about Owen coming on.
    “Owen on…he’s worthless.”
Glad I recorded the game so that I can see that moment again…

I was impressed with Krul…only disappointed with one piece and that was when he DIDN’T come charging out for the ball that Hernandez was about to get. But in the end, no worries and other than that…looks good to go in goal.

Very happy to see Ireland come on too. Really want to see him play more often.

  8. Good thread Toonsy 😉 have to agree with you, I just think its a shame that we only get 1 pt for that performance as it deserved atleast 2 😀
As for Micky the Rat fuk him

  9. Loved it. Absolutely loved it 😀
Krul had a very good game against his idol. He still has a though time coming out for balls but hopefully he’ll get better at that. One big worry for me though is that his kicking is terrible. Almost as bad as his shot stopping is great

I’ve tweeted him four times asking him for the facts, still no reply…

Should we have had a pen? I was at the other end – Just seen Pardews interview there and said it should have been, seen a few things on twitter saying it was a pen too. Not that im gunna complain im over the moon with a point.

  11. Thought Ireland looked a little rusty (understandable) but showed some nice touches and was sold short a couple of times. He’ll be alreet, but then I always said he would. Be interesting to see how he fits in at the weekend with Nolan back? Bench again?

  12. Brilliant thread toonsy, searched hard but couldn’t find a spelling mistake. Shyte predictions though…

    not really mate 😆 😆 😆

  13. Andrew – There was contact but I reckon it would have been harsh. It was about even in the end IMO.

  14. hes calm now jobey 😆

that snap-shot from ireland was nice, he must really want to prove himself as well, wasnt expecting him to play,

  15. Great game to watch, fair play to the lads. Toonsy, Rooney did not spoon it, it was actually a fantastic save from Krul. Deserves man of the match imo. Thanks for everything you do on this blog.

  16. Spencer 😉 do me proud with the Raylor one, and dont be slagging him as he isn’t the worst and a lot better than micky the rat

      (Quote)

  17. Toonsy @ 16 its a hard one as Guthrie was decent tonite but come to think of it bench Lovens and put Nolan in there instead and then maybe bring Ireland on 2nd half

      (Quote)

  18. Ireland looked well good. Don’t think the other lads are used to players making creative runs like that. They kept bolloxing the passes to him.

From what most of you Newcastle fans are saying you should be pleased I left the club! If i had known that earlier I could have left sooner!

  20. I watched the match on espn in NYC and they showed it a couple of times and commented he made a touch and I agree. A really sweet save.

  21. Thought the whole team played well tonight, just think if we had a top class forward we could have got three points, mclovin and shola gave it their all, but I just don’t think they are good enough.

      (Quote)

  22. Owens face when he came on was priceless. I don’t think he was expecting it to be that bad and he had to Stand there while Nile was getting treatment and take it all 😆
He looked like he had ants all over him and kept fussing with his collar looking like he was gonna cry 😆 😆

  24. Dave @ 23 – I agree. Guthrie was good tonight. The last three games he has probably been one of our best players. Reckon he is one that is playing for his future?

      (Quote)

  25. Not gunna keep posting what he says but apparently he tried his best everytime he played for us…What a shame it wasnt good enough.

  26. For the record, I tried my best in every game for Newcastle. Under KK I played well and i’ll never forget the 2 I scored against Sunderland.

From what most of you Newcastle fans are saying you should be pleased I left the club! If i had known that earlier I could have left sooner!

two from owen on twitter 😆

And I wouldnt slag Raylor off trust me, I love him 😆

  27. Toonsy you’re too level minded mate, wheres the Newcastle bias? Ours was defo a penalty and theres wasn’t 😀 never mind the tiote hand ball in the box..

      (Quote)

  28. JG – I thought exactly the same. I watched in amazement as Owen seemed shocked at the reception he was getting. Did Sir Michael expect red carpet or something? I know Shepherd said Owen was detached from the North-East, but I didn’t realise that he was detached from reality aswell.

Andy Carroll – I hope you were watching 😈

Jose – I hope you are now scared to leave 😆 😈

Andrew he’s faked his latest injury so he won’t have to face the music 😉

  31. Why is Owen trying to argue with hundreds of toon fans on twitter? surely he’s got the water bottles to fill up for United.

Who in their right mind would thank him? Aye cheers Michael mate for helping us go down, thanks a lot mate.

  33. I told him he was good at liverpool, but any toon fan who said he was good for us would either a 12 year old sunday leauge striker or a SMB on the wind up.

  34. Somebody look into this and verify.
Has micheal owen deleted his twitter account ❓ 😯

Jobey thats a hard one to comment on cos some of his family might be dead or seriously ill 🙄

  36. usually when i watch a 0-0 draw i am very dissapointed but from watching that game i am far from it!!! brilliant match , as both teams were desperate for a win!! gutierez in the first half was magnificent!! all game i was thinkin if only we had ben arfa and a gud striker and we wuda won this!!

      (Quote)

  37. Whe you can thank my unluckyness! I could have put on the draw and won about £22, I put on £8 that Man U would win, lost the £8 and we didn’t win either. I reckon if I had bet on the draw it would have been about 0-3 Man U, if a little generous. (If that point keeps us up I divn’t care) Howay the toon and Ireland for Blackpool (notice how we only play like that in cirtain games 😉 )

  38. i absolutely loved tht little jonas magic in the first half… over the moon with the point 😀 😀 😀 summer transfer window here we come

  40. Great game to watch, and great result.

Owen is a plum for thinking he would get treated differently. Fair enough he had injuries, but its him leaving when and how he did that we are annoyed with, not the injuries. No telling some folk

      (Quote)

  41. Good read that Toonsy – and we know from some posters on here that they arent grateful for where we are as a club and in the league, I dont expect Jose and Joey to leave.

      (Quote)

  42. Really enjoyed the performance and effort last night, just a shame our front two are just not good enough although ManUs were no better, Simpson seemed to be all over the place.
The ref was ***** for both teams and thats all you can ask for and he wasnt intimidated by them at all.
Nani is getting worse by the game, what a cheating swine he is, no wonder his fellow pros didnt vote for him.
And last but not least, MOM Tim Krul, 2 world class saves.

      (Quote)

  43. BBC sports news, apparently manure had all the chances ,and only 1 penalty incident,no bias there then

      (Quote)

  44. Enjoyed the game and the result last night.

Really pleased for Krul keeping a clean sheet. Have a lot of faith in him and can definitely be a big part of our future.

Shoala for a hour did a job.
Jose must have thought he was in the shop window last night and was also excellent.

Give Colo a new five year deal.

Ireland has that first touch that you can see he is a player.

    Loved it

      (Quote)

  45. Bobby

How can you say the ref was ***** for both teams. I thought he was first class.
Both claims for penalties were fifty fifty and he was consistent in his judgement. He didn’t wave cards about. Thought he was excellent. Used common sense.
If you mean he was ***** because he turned down the penalties and didn’t give either side a favour that is a bit strong.

      (Quote)

  46. Toby, agree about the ref.

Mainly because every other game I have seen on sky this season the ref has been the main player in the game and it would have been 2 penalties.
    Thought he did well.

Ireland made some great runs to find space, a couple of heavy passes from the lads though didn’t find him

      (Quote)

  47. Toby

Shola seemed dead after 50 minutes to me, had nothing left at all.

Does anyone think Krul should keep his place in the team after that even if Harps is fit? Because I do but I doubt he will…

      (Quote)

  48. Toby, the ref gave free kicks to both sides where there was no contact, failed to book Nani, booked Tiote for his first foul, failed to spot corners that were given as by kicks and vice versa, penalised Hernandez when our player had hold of him in the box, i could go on and on, yes he is above average to most we have had but to say he had a good game just because he wasnt intimidated by Manu is a bit OTT.

      (Quote)

  49. The Guardian referred to Hernandez as playing for ‘United’…….. when did we sign him then?

    🙄

      (Quote)

  50. I can’t believe that first 6 minutes. Ive never seen us batter Man U like that. They were like a boxer stumbling around nearly knocked out.

I guess it was just one of those games where it won’t go in the net. Im suprised he put Owen on, what sort of reception did they expect. His face was great.

      (Quote)

  51. Have to take my hat off to Krul aswell, he was brilliant last night; what a save when it went across the box. His kicking wasn’t even that bad either but it is his shot-stopping that is so impressive.

      (Quote)

  52. Toonsy what are you on about man! That Mail article used every other sentence to have a dig at us and our supporters! It followed the Mail format to a tee; even if the article is largely positive, the scaffolding on which the positivity is built is negativity. Clearly the journo had a great time at a class game with an electric atmosphere, and saw- with the economic state of the club- that the future could well be very bright for us. Instead of admitting that a large amount of us toon fans admit that £35 mil was too good to turn down, he isolates some negative comments from a mag fanzine just to prove to the world that we’re all still as deluded as they think we are. It was like he was writing the article through clenched teeth ffs!

“Newcastle supporters will tell you they still have much to complain about. Owner Mike Ashley has ruined this club, apparently”

“But here they were: Manchester United in town, 40 points on the board by full time and six places above Sunderland in the table. Happy? Of course.”

“High earners such as Joey Barton and Jose Enrique are also expected to leave in the summer.”

“St James’ Park was a great place to be on Tuesday night. It usually is, but even more so when a big team are in town.” (This one’s probably the most sly dig of em all the slimy little kunt!)

“There will be no relegation drama this season, though. The Toon Army should be thankful for that. They won’t be, but they should be.”

I F*CKING HATE THE DAILY MAIL!!!!

      (Quote)

  53. that second quote should read like this, sorry lads

““But here they were: Manchester United in town, 40 points on the board by full time and six places above Sunderland in the table. Happy? Of course not.”

      (Quote)

  54. The ref didn’t brilliant not to crumble under the 92nd minute man utd dive bullshit as usual. It would have been so easy to give that, and then get praised from Fergie.

      (Quote)

  55. I agree, Devon – shocking article; typical application of minority evidence to support a personal opinion. Just an evolution of the ‘deluded fans’ stance of old. It’s really just a massive dig at us, the Toon Army – no more than that.

As with so many journos, he lacks the basic intelligence and understanding to see beyond pound notes. He can’t even entertain the other risks and impacts associated with the Carroll departure.

Still – “Daily Mail in printing ***** articles shocker!”. 🙄
