Boing boing’ed! Newcastle 3-3 West Brom.

Taylor opens the scoring.
Newcastle played out an entertaining yet frustrating 3-3 draw with West Brom this afternoon as the two sides shared the spoils in a six-goal thriller.

The draw means that Newcastle finish the season in 12th place, which is probably more than a lot of us expected way back in August. However, the fact that we were sitting pretty in 9th place with only 30 minutes of the match remaining only to end up 12th will no doubt be a disappoitment to some.

Not to me, I couldn’t have cared less as this season was all about survival. Sure finishing in the top ten would have been nice, but will anyone really look back in a few years time with and remember when we finished 12th instead of 9th? It’s hardly do or die is it? And if the players see it as some form of backwards step they should wise up and take their share of the blame for blowing a three goal lead.

The match started off pretty lively and Shane Ferguson was first to be denied when Scott Carson comfortably saved his shot at goal. West Brom had their first chance four minutes later when Jose Enrique gifted possession to Somen Tchoyi who set up Marc-Antoine Fortune who saw his shot blocked on the line by a resurgent Steven Taylor.

From then on it was the home side, sporting their new home shirt for next season, who took control of the game. They were rewarded for their dominance in the 17th minute with a goal from Steven Taylor who turned Yousseff Mulumbu before firing home from close range after a Ryan Taylor corner caused problems in the box for the West Brom defence.

The hosts had further chances to increase the lead through Danny Guthrie and Steven Taylor before they got the second goal six minutes before time in rather dubious circumstances.

Shola Ameobi flicked the ball on to Peter Lovenkrands who volleyed at goal only for Scott Carson to flap the ball behind him. Carson eventually caught up with the ball on the goal-line but it was adjudged to have crossed the line. As yet I’ve not seen a replay which conclusively proves whether it was a goal or not. Still, it was given and it gave the hosts a healthy and deserved lead heading into half-time.

It got better just two minutes into the second half when Jonas Olsson spooned Jose Enrique’s hopeful cross into the back of his own net to make it 3-0, but from then on it all turned rather sour for the home side.

Roy Hodgson pushed Somen Tchoyi into a more advanced midfield role which paid dividends soon enough as he reduced the defecit. Danny Simpson tried and failed to spring an offside trap which allowed Tchoyi through on goal to apply a cool finish past Tim Krul.

At that stage it looked like it was only going to be a consolation, but lo-and-behold the alarm bells started ringing with twenty minutes to go when Tchoyi turned Fabricio Coloccini and smashed the ball past Krul to make it 3-2. There was very little Krul could have done about it such was the power of the shot.

By now West Brom had their tails up and could sense an equaliser. In contrast Newcastle seemed to have switched off and looked a shadow of the team that we saw in the first half. I had one of those nasty feelings if the truth be known.

That feeling was proved right on the stroke of full-time when Jose Enrique got tricked by Ismael Miller who backheeled the ball for Jonas Olsson who put his cross straight onto the head of an unmarked Tchoyi who nodded the ball into the back of the net for his hat-trick.

As the full-time whistle went some fans saw fit to boo the team. They’ve paid their money so they can do as they wish, but in my opinion it was disgusting and they should have a word with themselves. I’m sure it will persuade players to stay…

Finishing in 12th is not a bad thing, not when you look at our squad, and it gives us a nice basis to build on for next season. If anything staying out of the top ten will keep a few expectations in check. The Mackems may have finished above us by one point, but there time will come.

Personally I’m more annoyed at letting three goals slip though!

  2. I am loving tearing into the mackems. Their absolute delight at finishing above us after the season they have had is cringeworthy. The best thing is, they are actually trying to back their argument up with stats!!!! HAHAHA

  3. gutted we didnt finish above the mackems ,but we finished above the other red and white stripes, grand in the **** pocket 😆

  4. Moreno – I believe they are readying the open top bus as we speak. They were going to call a bank holiday tomorrow but most of them don’t work and it’s signing on day on Wearside so they decided against it.

  9. BB – To be honest I like it more today than I have done before. I still won’t get it though as I don’t believe in names/numbers so it will look shitty with the big black panel with nothing on it.

  10. Toonsy-only problem with that is we might start getting flooded with some of the morons from Ed’s 😀 The amount that were saying our entire team were sh1te and we need replacements everywhere is maddening. People are forgetting how good a team West Brom are under Hodgson…

  18. Agree with you Toonsy and most of the others. As the season kicked off, would have been happy with 17th, just sick today that we gave away 3 silly goals and could have had 9th, but overall, the lads have done great throughout the season.

Been reading Ed’s when I couldn’t get on here, the amount of people slating Pardew is shocking, was the same on .org, but no shock there eh!! Reckon that Hughton wouldn’t have made the bad tatical errors that Pardew made today. From what I remember, that was perhaps the one downside about Hughton, so can’t see how they can say that. I wasn’t happy with Smith coming on, but could that be coz it might be his last game for the club? Also blaming Simpson for today, I didn’t think he was too bad, if anybody was at fault, I thought perhaps Smith. But not to worry, we finished 12th and looking forward to aim for higher next season, roll on August

  22. Simon I said before the game that it was a cert that Smith would get playing, I think Pards felt like he owed it to him 🙁

      (Quote)

  23. Oh and Batty, as the full time whistle went off, thought of you and your grand, know you would have rather had 9th, but £1000 can’t be bad

      (Quote)

  24. Just got back home after that today. Once West Brom realised Simpson was our weak link they profited. I say again we need a better right back. Could be apportioned part of the blame on all three goals. Why does he show a right footed player who is on the left inside and allow him to shoot. Brainless. then he backs off and off and allows a cross into the box in the ninetieth minute. just not good enough mind he wasn’t alone in an abject second half performance. Toonsy I might be persuaded that Raylor is not as good as people make out.

  25. Aye Big Dave, you were right and we can’t complain really, if he is moving on, done his time and about £60k a week off the wages

  26. Did anyone stay for the walkaround at the end? Was there any telltale signs that players could be off from anyone?

I don’t think there would have been many stayed, not as many as last time, then again we threw away a perfectly good lead then aswell. 😥

Enrique was the only one who didn’t clap when they came out, he made silly mistakes all game and just looked like he had one foot in the departure lounge.

  29. Now unexpected then DJG?

Must admit I was pissed off with those who boo’d at the final whistle. Still, it’s their money, but it’s hardly the right sign to send out is it?

      (Quote)

  30. Yeah Toonsy, I think in hindsight they probably regret it. Emotion would have been running strong after throwing away a 3 goal lead and half surrendering bragging rights to the mackems. So I forgive them.

I think they were booing more at Pardew than the players toonsy. But im not sure.

DJG what reception did Jose get?

Non as far as I could tell. From him it was almost keep your head down and get out of here, from the fans, they were just ignoring him really, didn’t seem to want to kick up a fuss.

      (Quote)

  32. Toonsy, I stayed, the players really didn’t make too much fuss, think they were embarrassed if anything. I was looking out for Jose and eventually saw him, took a while. He seemed to be laughing and joking with a couple of the players, not sure who, but had a smile on his face. Couldn’t tell either way what he will be doing from the walk around. Mind you, being the type of player he is and the way he normally reacts, would have thought he would have done a Robert and chucked his shirt in te crowd, hopefully kept everything else on mind. Bunt none of that, might just be clutching at straws there like

  33. The groundsmen overwatered the gallowate half at half time. I lost count of the amount of times LuaLua, Best ect FELL OVER and lost the ball. Absolute joke, WTF do they wet it so much?

      (Quote)

  34. I stayed for the players to come back out, Barton and Nolan were fantastic – both were last to leave, Barton was great with Nolans kids as well.

Dunno where Jonas was or Sol…

      (Quote)

  35. Just think how ecstatic the crowd would have been if the roles were reversed and we came back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3. Funny old world eh, maybe the players just shouldn’t try for the first half from now on 😀

Fergie looked real good again I cant believe how fast he has came on

Aye, he’s a crackin player. He is the only one who gave 100%, apart from maybe the 2 centre halves and Lovenkrands. He looks reasonably quick and he has a canny knack of getting into the box.

      (Quote)

  38. DJG – Personally I think they were booing because the team had just pissed a three goal lead up the wall. Granted Pardew made some clangers (like all managers do) today, but at 3-0 I think most of us thought the game was safe so he probably thought the same hence why he gave some fringe players a run. Personally I think that was Smith’s farewell game, hopefully 😛

  39. Munich – It’s been down for me since about 4:15 until 8pm. Server issue and the bloke who sorts it has been out on the ****.

Back up and running now so welcome back muppets 🙄 😆

  40. Can’t believe some fans decided to boo at the end like, they need to take a look at what the players have done over the entire season not just a bad 45 minutes.

Our main goal this season was survival – I for one would have took fourth bottom before the season started, the players, Hughton and Pardew have done themselves proud this season.

  41. MM aye m8 its been doon, some say toonsy fell asleep and knocked the switch off,but dont belive rumours 😉

    hows you m8?

  42. Aye Moreno I know it should never have happened and we should have seen it out, but we took off three of the most effective players, guthrie was having a stormer, fergie was brilliant, loven well he was alright-fair enough best could have come on for him, but those subs just disrupted our team massively. Again we missed Nolan’s leadership which is a worrying thing for next season. Probably the only game so far where I’d say pards got it wrong, but meh.

  43. yalright chapitos…thank goodness the blog is back up. ! I had a skeg around elsewhere, but there was so much daft ***** being spouted I got a bit of a huff on…

Pity about todays result, but we live to fight again, bring on the new season ! Pity we didn’t finish above the great unwashed but it aint a big blow at the end of the day. I feel sorry for the tea lady who had to cancel her new frock for the Mallorca holiday…looks like it’ll be Cullercoats instead…could have been great had they won the 500K that kindly offered up, but the players blew it…it’s all Pardews fault, would never have happened under CH…… 😥

Oh…by the way, I’m off to bed, have a splendid new week boys and girls…….Howay the Lads !!
