In other transfer news, and according to more reports in France, Newcastle have had a bid accepted for Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro with a fee said to be around the €12 million mark. Gameiro has expressed a preference to join Valencia although it would appear that they are having a hard time trying to match our offer due to their financial issues.
Both of them are excellent players so I really do hope these rumours are true. Time will tell on that of course, but what I will say is that the French press are usually more accurate than their UK counterparts and generally have to have a verified reason to print a story. In short, they can’t just print what they like as they are under much stricter regulation over there.
Back to Cabaye, and a move for him would kind of fit in with our French scouting activities to be honest. There have been numerous reports of scouts at French games, Lille games even, so perhaps this is the man that caught their attention?
A box-to-box midfielder with an eye for a pass and a knack of popping the ball in the back of the net is the best way to describe Cabaye. He’s made 252 appearances for his various clubs and has managed 39 goals and 35 assists, but it’s only really since 2007 that he has featured consistently in the first team at Lille. As I’ve said, nothing is official or anything so you can take this with as many pinches of salt you feel you need to, but if it is true then we’ve pulled off another great import from the French league, and all for a bargain fee suggested of around the €4 million mark.

Idk but I was just thinking, it isnt that far fetched that we will get transfers in early since we’re paying the fees up front so teams will like to have that to reinvest.

What’s with all the good feeling on here today , not that it’s a bad thing 🙂 but lets just wait and see who really comes in , though the cabeye rumor seems to be bang on with all the reports coming out of France . Can’t see Gervinho coming Le **** are in for him as well , then again we seem to be heading towards being a french-African team too if all our rumored targets are true (not that i have a problem with that). I would like to see the Danny Graham deal come off also his goal scoring record is good and he is a local lad and would not cost more than 3-4 million . For those that say he has only played in the Championship ,i say look at Leon Best the first chance he got this season he looked good and got goals ,some players are late developers .

NEWCASTLE United have made their first transfer breakthrough of the summer by swooping for Lille’s France international midfielder playmaker Yohan Cabaye.
The Sunday Sun can reveal Cabaye agreed to sign for United on Thursday afternoon, with Newcastle beating competition from Arsenal to land one of the brightest talents in French football.
He plays his last game for the French champions today and, while the deal is not yet finalised, United hope to confirm it in the next 10 days.
In news which will delight the Toon Army, United are now confident of making it a double raid on Lille by clinching a deal for Ivory Coast striker Gervinho.
Having decided to leave Lille, Gervinho has a choice between two clubs – with United one of those sides.
After a week of negativity on Tyneside, the Cabaye deal is a major coup for United.
In a superb piece of business for the club, they landed the Lille star for just 5million thanks to a get- out clause in his contract.
We revealed last week the club were closing in on an international midfielder and that man is Cabaye, a box-to-box midfielder with an eye for goal.
He scored 15 goals for Lille last season and, although he was less prolific, Cabaye was just as impressive this season as the club clinched a sensational league and cup double.
Capped by his country at every level since under-16, Cabaye represents just the sort of player who can move United forward next season.
Having watched him for over a year, they have certainly done their homework.
Newcastle are hoping for more transfer joy in the coming weeks.
Advisors for long-term target Gervinho have been in negotiations with the club this week and United believe they are one of two compelling options for the striker.
Newcastle managed to resolve the wage issue which was holding back the deal – now they just have to hope the prospect of playing European football elsewhere does not count against them.
They will hope the presence of compatriot Cheick Tiote could swing matters in their favour, but despite strong interest in Kevin Gameiro sources in France still believe he is heading for Spain’s La Liga.
Newcastle are the only club to table a bid, but if Valencia register an interest – which they are yet to do – the player would prefer to go there.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Sun understands there is absolutely no interest in either striker Danny Graham or winger Seb Larsson, who was freed by Birmingham last week.

Lille attacker Gervinho has already decided where his future lies but will not make an announcement until next month.

Gervinho has had an excellent campaign for the French side and his displays propelled Lille to their first Ligue 1 title since 1954.
Major European clubs such as Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina have all been linked with a move for the Ivory Coast international and he says he is looking forward to playing in the Champions League next year.
“After the last match with Lille and a game with Ivory Coast, I will go on holiday. I have already made my choice. Either I will leave or not, everyone will know it later. It is a personal choice,” Gervinho told L’Equipe.
“The coach wants me to stay. The club will play in the Champions League and he wants to play it with me. I want to play it too, if I have such an opportunity.”
However, the 24-year-old claims that while he is keen to play in Europe’s elite club competition, it may not necessarily be with Lille.
He added: “I can play it [the Champions League] at Lille or somewhere else, that is no problem. We have had several talks and we know what we told ourselves. There are still a few days to talk before holidays.”
