Have we had enough confirmation yet?

Close but no cigar, yet.
Are we there yet? Can we finally we finally nod heads at a job well done by the club? Have we had enough confirmation that Yohan Cabaye is soon to be a Newcastle player?

The answer to all of those questions is no as it stands and nothing is ever official until it pops up on the club website blah blah, but I would suggest that enough caveats from enough people that matter have been dropped to allow us to start pondering just how Yohan Cabaye will take to life in a black and white shirt.

It’s been rumoured for days now that the transfer of Cabaye from Lille to Newcastle would be imminent. Rumours have spread like wildfire and the last few days have been full of various reports and tweets and other bits of gossip. However I would say now that we can tentatively toast our first signing of the summer considering the player and his manager have both confirmed that he is to move to Newcastle.

Those of you who watched the Lille game last night will have seen one of the most poignant farewell moments ever to have been witnessed on a football pitch. Cabaye was subbed towards the end of the match which signal an outpouring of emotion from the crowd and gave his soon to be former team-mates the chance to show their appreciation to the player – each one in turn gave him a hug as he left the pitch.

His seemingly soon to be former manager, Rudi Garcia, had this to say in his post-match press conference:

“Yohan announced yesterday to me first, then the whole group, that he has made his choice to join Newcastle. It is a choice that I respect, although I would have liked him to stay with us.”

Of course there are still things that can go wrong with the pending transfer so until it is official from our end I’ll not pop the corks fully. I’ll just keep that champagne on ice ready, hopefully, for when it does become official.

At a fee of around €5 million you would have to say that it is a good deal. The club have pulled off another coup if the deal gets completed and have landed a current French international for a knock down price. If they keep the spending down by acquiring players of Cabaye’s quality then I’ll be a happy man come the end of the transfer window.

I read somewhere that the wage on offer from us was £60,000-a-week although I would suggest that €60,000-a-week (around £50,000) is probably closer to the mark. It’s still not a bad wedge though to be fair. Where is Steve Wraith and his proclamations of that £25,000-a-week wage cap again?

For those wondering just why it isn’t confirmed by NUFC as yet, apparently it’s because Cabaye is part of the France squad that will play Belarus, Poland and Ukraine in the coming weeks. After that it is expected that Cabaye will fly to Newcastle and conclude the deal.

So there you go – officially unofficial, but for how long?

  1. Good article. I should have looked at the drafts before i started writing. sigh. 😆 😆

  2. Toonsy I was pleased to read what his x manager said but when I heard he was on international duty it filled me with fear, we just seem to have had real bad luck with injuries, but then you cant wrap them in cotton wool

    You read somewhere? ❓ Very convincing ❓ 😆 😆

  4. Watched a bit of him play last night, should be a good signing. Get him, couple of forwards and a winger in and some cover elsewhere and we should be going places

Been informed by a reliable source that Gervinho underwent a medical before the Lille match, and has verbally agreed to join #nufc.

  6. @ Bobby – I read it on here actually, from the reports in France, which even you commented on and said that maybe £40k a week….

Still makes Wraith’s adamancy on £25k look a bit silly no?

  7. I think the most positive thing about this signing (if and when confirmed) is that the window hasn’t even opened yet.

We are getting our targets sewn up before the other clubs have a chance.

This is partly due to being able to prepare properly by assuring safety sooner rather than later too 😎

      (Quote)

  8. Isn’t Mehi Abeid our first signing since he himself has confirmed he has agreed a deal and the only reason he hasn’t signed yet is he is waiting a month for his current contract to run out.

      (Quote)

  9. Moreno – We’re only buying players now so we can sell them on next week for profit 😉

      (Quote)

  10. Toonsy, reports from France suggest he is going to be paid an annual salary of 3.6 million euros 😯

      (Quote)

  11. And the way the exchange rate is heading, that means he will be paid a billion pounds sterling per year.

  12. I guess it is a race to see who is first put on the official website then.

Let’s make an online bet for it, lol.

  13. lads my internet went down last nite carnt beleave i missed all the fun gutted   but i am happy with todays news 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  14. Moreno – That’s the one.

    3.6 million/52 weeks = 69,000 a week

Converted into £ is roughly £60k a week.

But Steve Wraith says that it’s only £25k a week. With all his inside sources and friends and tweets about mundane stuff I’d have though he’d know 😕

  15. we should be thanking the bindipers for makeing all this possible 😆 😆 😆

  16. Everyone keeps saying he’s a really good player so I hope he does sign.

Would still like a couple of strikers though.

  17. If we get all these guys, are we gonna announce one per day to have a mega reveal week or are we gonna have them all in one huge group next to Pardew for immediate visual impact?

      (Quote)

  18. that what i heard the club are planning on doing revealing all the players at the same time

      (Quote)

  19. My god yous really believe we pay wages of £60k per week.! Incredible! 😛

      (Quote)

  20. Almost as incredible as suggesting we have a 25k a week wage cap.

Must be good though if we can still attract the likes of Ben Arfa and Cabaye from Champions League teams by paying peanuts to people 🙄 😛

      (Quote)

  21. Wonder what could have convinced Cabaye to move from a solid looking, title winning, champion’s league team in Lille to move to a team like Newcastle, 12 in the Prem….Surely not the 25k as quoted by Wraith, and is it 28k that you state bobby? Classic

  22. If Everton are keen on Joey (he doesn’t seem keen) I think instead of a fee we should ask for a straight swap with Arteta.

      (Quote)

  23. Yeah I’d find wages at that level extremely hard to believe.
I wouldn’t be surprised if wages haven’t been formalised yet. Also medicals to go thru.
These deals aren’t done yet, just because they have agreed ” in principle ” to come to NUFC means nowt.
Only believe it when they wearing B & W.
Wages could be a stumbling block

  24. Toby, would never happen like, unfortunately 😕 Shame they sold Pienar in Jan, he would have been an awesome pick up on a free this summer…

“You have all made your point re Wraith and the 25k so move on”

Oh aye, because that would have gone down well had the wages been proved to be 25k a week. I’m sure it would have all been done and dusted by now and we wouldn’t hear another peep about it 🙄

However, because it’s a positive for the club some people just want to sweep it under the carpet. Just about sums up the motivation of some of our “fans”

      (Quote)

  26. BB – Do you seriously believe that wages won’t have been discussed? Would Cabaye tell his own team-mates and manager that he was moving before having even talked to his prospective new club? Hmm…… Sounds a bit far-fetched to me like….

      (Quote)

  27. Exactly Toonsy. Way things are now, what footballer would sign on for a top division club for £20-£25k a week? just not going to happen!! Maybe a kid signing up for less, but not your ave player never mind an international. I’m no big fan of Ashley and Co, but dont for one second think the wages are that low in footballer terms. But if he has turned a corner and these players are starting to come in, he should be giving a bit of praise

      (Quote)

  28. Wages will always be talked about first. In an ideal world as Keane once said, players should be asking how often will I play as the first question as they are highly paid and wages 2nd question. but we all know that never happens and how much will I get paid is the first thing asked, much the same as us moving jobs I suppose

      (Quote)

  29. Newkie – Maybe. Doubt it though. He usually only pipes up when there is a bit of controversy about and where there is an opportunity for him to stir up a bit of **** which gullible people latch onto. It’s ok though as he is a “really nice bloke” and **** like that 🙄

      (Quote)

  30. I dont know how these deals are done Toonsy, I dont know how we found out contract release clauses either. And I certainly dont know the size of wages offered, nor am I guessing. I just hope it all goes through ok, then I’ll believe it.

  32. Toonsy @39. Agree with you. We have some good news for a change. Club showing some good intent on transfer targets exactly what everyone has been wanting and yet anything positive sticks in the throat of some. I’m sure some people would prefer it all to implode so they can keep on with their twisting and whining. Hear the mackems are in need of bums on seats they might want to try that if they can’t get any enjoyment out of following the Toon

  35. FFS is Barton really as good as some people think. I mean since Carroll left he hasn’t done all that much. He go’s on about being better than Lampard and Gerrard ect. Well he played against Lampard at Chelsea and I have to say there really was one winner and it wasn’t Joey. In the last game he got intercepted by West Brom quite a few times and his passes to team mates had unnecessary power and spin; so they struggled to control them and lost the ball. My point, is Barton really that good, some talk about him like he’s Xavi or something. For me he’s been good in some games and average in others.

      (Quote)

  36. Re Joey, fear we may have seen the last of him but hope not. Mind you don’t know if he will be coerced into leaving early or just say I’m going now where and sit tight till next summer. Hope he stays and somehow they persuade Jose to as well but I’m not holding my breath on that one

      (Quote)

  37. DJG-You kidding mate? Barton was all over Lampard, and that’s not just bias. Considering the beasts they have in midfield like Essien and Mikel, Barton did brilliantly to contain Chelsea’s midfield, he broke up attacks solidly and was able to spray passes out. Considering he had flaming Ryan taylor next to him to partner him, he had to do most of the donkey work. All I remember Lampard doing was a savage late tackle in the second half, apart from that he played no killer through balls or made any decent forward runs.

Barton has also managed well massively out of position…same can’t be said for Lampard/gerrard when they play for england out of position and are just sh1te..

  38. If Steve Wraith is a supporter he should shut his trap if he isn’t 1000000 percent certain otherwise it causes negativity and paints a bad picture to the press.

He needs to realise some players have a hand up his *** and he is nothing more than a puppet to them – for their own means ends.

      (Quote)

  39. I for one am quite pleased with the way the club is handling transfers. It looks like the bad old days of chairmen splashing all the money on a ‘big name’ star are gone. The club are signing players who we have scouted for a year or more. (Benny. Tiote, Cabaye) and they are absolute top drawer players and the best we can attract in our current state. The club doesn’t seem to be taking any risks or giving in to pressure from millionairre players and agents. All this bodes well for next season when you consider we had one Carr signing this season, (Tiote) who for me was well above the standard of most of the rest of the team. We could potentially have 4 or 5 Carr signings fit and available next season and more the season after. Eventually we would be in a position to go after the bigger players once we climb the league a bit and are competing for stuff. I can understand why some people hate Ashley but how can people not see that the current transfer policy is much better than the previous regime. We are signing top players that have been scouted many times by Carr and young talented players like Ferguson waiting to break through.

  40. Toonsy @ 53 , leave Ed alone…..he is just finding out we arent signing Larrson 😆 How gutted do you think he is? 😆

      (Quote)

  41. Johno – On a scale of 1-10? About 11. He refused to believe we weren’t in for him the other day. We believe it’s just paper gossip 🙄

Really? I believe he is just an average Premier League footballer…. 😆

  43. Larsson played against us twice for Birmingham when they lost both and he really was USELESS. He has no pace, little vision, spends more time tracking back into fullback and has a good set piece but no better than Cabaye.

What does Ed see in him ❗ He is utter ****. Even Birmingham fans arn’t bothered about losing him.

      (Quote)

  44. He missed an absolute sitter against us. The lad’s sh1te. When we needed a crosser for Carroll in Jan then fair enough, but why the hell would we want him? I don’t get it, first I thought Ed was just doing ti for the hits but he seems to have developed some sort of Freudian attachment to the lad 😕

      (Quote)

  45. amen to that DJG, sensible purchases and not bowing down to greedy agents aka Willie McKay. The club as a whole from what we are seeing and hearing now are positively heading in the right direction …….onwards and upwards 😀 😀 …….reo-coker and “Ed” Larsson to the Mackems

Ed has been going on about signing Larsson for about 3 or 4 years! Im not suprised he is making a song and dance about it. I hope he goes to widdow twanky and is part of the team that takes them down next season. 😈
