Do we play better football under Pardew?

Time for Pardew to show us his style.
With little gossip going on at the moment it gives us a bit of time to ponder some other, perhaps deeper, aspects of football and Newcastle United.

Now this article is mainly spawned from the fact that the bulk of the players we have been linked with are technical players, flair players if you like, with an eye for a pass and the ability to do that something that little bit special. Time will tell if we can get those players to replicate it in the Premier League, or indeed if we sign them at all, but if we do I would say that it’s a pretty safe bet that the style of football at St James’ Park will improve.

This summer should signal the next level of our Premier League evolution. Last season was all about survival whereas the upcoming season the aim, quite rightly, will be that little bit higher both in terms of results and league position, although the two generally tend to go hand in hand.

There is more to it than that though. Us NUFC fans are a special breed when it comes to football. We tend to want to see football played in the right way with a bit of technique and ability as opposed to a more direct style of play such as what Sam Allardyce tried to instill on Tyneside. He didn’t last long…

I think, results aside, that the type of football that we play will be the making or breaking of Alan Pardew. Obviously results are the most important thing, but it’s also important to get those results by playing in the right way, especially at home. I’m not saying we should be cavalier in every home game, but I feel that under Chris Hughton we paid the price for not being positive enough at home sometimes.

Of course as a manager you can only work with what you have at your disposal, and lets face it, our current lot are hardly flair players are they? Hard working? Yes. Willing to put in a shift? Yes. Known for their tricks and flicks? No, not really.

Mind you, I do think that the arrival of Pardew has seen us improve the type of football we play, although perhaps some of that is down to the fact that we no longer had the option of lumping it up to Carroll as an outlet. I also think Pardew has generally been more positive at home, which is why we’ve lost only twice at St James’ Park under him. There is still room for improvement though.

That is where this summer comes in, and where this transfer window becomes vitally important for the success of next season. It sounds simple doesn’t it? In actual fact it’s a delicate balance of building on what we already have available to us and complimenting it with the ‘X-Factor’ that these flair players can bring.

That is what we are all waiting to see. It’s all well and good being linked with the Cabaye’s, the Gameiro’s, the Gervinho’s and N’Zogbia’s of the footballing world, but it’s another thing getting them through the door and signed and sealed as Newcastle United players.

That is what I’m waiting to see – whether or not it happens.

P.S – As mentioned yesterday when I was rattling on about dates for your diary, the official release date for the Premier League fixture list has been tracked down. They will be released exactly two weeks today on Friday 17th June at 9am.

  1. Yes, we do.

Simple enough really, more entertaining to watch, as you say Hoots wasn’t the most positive and seemed to lack a plan B.

I go to matches / watch football to be entertained, Pardew and the lads did that very well. Arsenal game for instance..

  2. I think that we do. We are a lot more attacking since he has come in. I’ve noticed he’s encouraged players to go forward and to not be afraid of taking someone on.

Pardew was know at Southampton for having an attacking team which really helped them get great results. The type of players that we seem to be going for in this transfer window do seem like we will become a more attacking side with pace

    What you been changing like?

  4. Goose – No. Not really. But something fairly important has not loing happened. I’ll leave it cryptic until some gets it.

Clue: You can tell what it is just by looking around the site 😉

  6. Aye. Sent the boys round 😆

Back on topic, I’d like to think Pardew can get us playing some decent stuff. As I said in the article, I think he started it with us last season, but with better players hopefully he can take it up a level 🙂

  7. wonder what another certain site says aboot that 😀 ,how gives a **** anyway 😆 😆 😆

  8. That Qatar group have brought a Spanish team aswell. Malaga. They’re getting everywhere these days 😆

  9. I don’t really think its so much about positive/negative playstyles really. Hoots could get the lads worked up for the big matches, Emirates, Goodison, Stamford bridge, we showed ability going forward but also kept our composure and ability to defend our lead.

Pardew has improved our home record, at the expense of our away record you can say. We’ve had some dire attacking performances, but maybe that’s as we didn’t have our “star striker.” Team blending takes time anyway and naturally gets better over the season…so in conclusion, i’ve jabbered on and not made much sense of an answer 😀

  10. Good thread. 🙂

In short, yes. There has been an improvement in the way we have been playing. Not a huge improvement mind, but thats perhaps not suprising since the new coaching staff effectively took over half way through the season. I think we are limited in our play in that almost all our creativity has been down the left channel. Pardew moved on Routledge and hasn’t really had any other options on the right so I’ll be interested to see how he addresses this during the close season. Im also interested to see if they go for another senior RB, someone like when we signed Habib Beye who can come in and improve that area. The current group isn’t good enough to take us forward next season IMO. It seems like we will get Cabaye so asuming we have Tiote holding and Cabaye free it will be interesting to see what happens to Barton and Nolan. Of course the manager can only work with the players he has at his disposal so who we bring will be crucial. But Im quietly confident in Carr, Stone, Carver and Pardew. Moreso than I was at this point last year.

  11. Definitely play better footie under pardew. It’ll be interesting to see how he shapes our supposed 4-5-1 and particularly who he ends up slotting in which position

  12. After hoping they would go down ect. I now finally feel sorry for West Ham fans. The nightmare has just begun! 😆

  13. As goose said, the Southampton fans, well the ones I know from dealing with the ports and stuff, really rated patdew and liked his style of play. Hopefully he can do it with us.

  15. 2010/11 season: Newcastle 6-0 Villa, Newcastle 6-2 Sunderland (agg), Newcastle 7-1 West Ham (agg), Newcastle 5-4 Arsenal (agg), Newcastle 4-3 Chelsea, Newcastle 3-1 Liverpool, Newcastle 4-1 Wolves. All eclipsed by Tiote!
Sad goodbye for Chris Hughton, an unlikely legend. And a more disappointing one for Carroll, an unlikely ******.

  19. Army im not having a pop at you, but I really dont see how the words Legend can be attached to Hooters, I think it diminishes the meaning when it’s attached to proper Toon legends like Wor Jackie, Moncur, Keegan, Shearer, Sir Bobby etc.
I know he done a good job but IMO nowhere near enough to have legendary status 😳

  20. The only striker with a lot of caps is Benzema. All the others seem to have no or a few caps. 😕

I wonder if Gamerio will get on at some point.

      (Quote)

  21. Hopefully he will…he’ll have a howler and put all potential buyers off apart from us, then we scoop him up for 10mil 😀

      (Quote)

  22. Thing with PSG is that surely now they are flash with cash they’ll go a step above Gameiro and go for a proper name like a Benzema and so on? Maybe with all that money they’ll be shopping in different windows to the one Gameiro is in?

      (Quote)

  23. I disagree Big Dave , I think the job Hoots done does deserve Legendary status. I know he had the best squad and the most money that season in the championship but what he achived was remarkable. The club was on a very slipperly sloap and we really could of ended up anywhere. Fair enough he wasnt 1st choice and he got the job by default , but he worked under circumstances most managers don’t find themselves in yet created a team spirit and an envirment for us to bounce straight back and laid the foundations for the club to build on. Even though his stint was short lived Hoots is a Newcastle legend just as much as all those you named

  24. ‘Queens Park Rangers captain Adel Taarabt has vowed to never play for Morocco again after learning he will start among the substitutes in the country’s vital African Nations Cup qualifier with Algeria on Saturday.

He told Moroccan radio station Radio Mars: “I have decided to never play for Morocco again, with or without Eric Gerets in charge.
“I’m very angry and the national team is over for me.
“Every time I come to play for Morocco the same thing happens and I’m sick of this situation.”

  25. Johno Toon I respect your opinion, but I tend to think that a few of the senior players had a lot more to do with team spirit, results, etc than Hooters did, and I think it takes a bit more than a season in the CCC with one of the best and most expensive teams ever to grace the CCC to achive that Status.
I just find it strange that some think of him in the same terms as the Legends I mentioned 😕

      (Quote)

  26. Taarabt throwing his toys out the pram. Man the f*ck up, if you’re country meant owt to you rather than your own ego you’d get a grip. Wouldn’t want him here either. He’s fine in a winning team, but I reckon he’ll be too willing to throw the towel in in the Prem.

Also re-Gameiro not going to PSG, it does make sense, as Benzema has been fairly unsettled at Real for a while…can only see him going back to France or Arsenal..

Lets not even go there shall we Ed ? Otherwise those who really know what they’re talking about will drag up Pardwho’s record and compare it (almost like for like) with JFK !!!!!

So did we play better under JFK ??????? Do me a favour.

This blog hints at being on NUFC’s payroll every now and again which makes it seem more plausible every time you post utter garbage like this !

  29. Richie @ 46 I just think that you need to do far more for the Toon to be considered a legend and to throw the name about demeans what the other true legends have done for us
